Go To

The Doom Patrol are trapped with their most shameful memories.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Disproportionate Retribution: Played for drama. In Vic's memory, he recalls a time when he was a young child and made a mess in a toy store while looking for an action figure that looked like him. The store manager, in a brazing display of racism, tries to have him arrested for the "damages" (note, all he did was create some minor clutter that would take a minute to clean up). He also shows No Sympathy to the child's simple request to find a black superhero toy, even sneering that "nobody wants a black superhero", and his dad, in an attempt to protect Vic, has to scold him since the manager is clearly not going to be reasonable, and the store security is already gearing to back him up.
  • Heteronormative Crusader: It's revealed that Larry's parents were extremely homophobic and forced him into conforming with living as a straight man, as to be expected given the time he's from, which as a gay man left a significant trauma on him.
  • Freudian Excuse: Vic, Cliff, and Larry encounter the memories that left a significant scar on their persons, and shaped much of their personalities and subconscious attitudes. Vic re-witnesses his first encounter with racism as a child, which killed his childhood innocence and led to him living his life like an obedient soldier ever since. Cliff relives one of the first hedonistic parties he had after becoming a celebrity race car driver which he attended while leaving baby Clara in the backseat of his car. Larry relives the day of his wedding, when his mother urged him to hide his sexuality and choose to live a "traditional" life, resulting in him staying in the closet for decades hating himself.
  • Shout-Out: Jane's subconscious has Kay appear as an adult woman surrounded by her alternate personalities appearing as muppets in a Subverted Kids' Show setting, which happens to be called Underground Avenue, almost certainly a nod to Avenue Q.
