Recap / Dont Hug Me Im Scared Pilot

Go To

An experimental pilot for a Don't Hug Me I'm Scared TV series. The series intended to be more topical and to expand the world, reasons that the creators later found themselves dissatisfied with. A proper series would later be released, trimming down the expansionist aspects back to "claustrophobic horror", but it still debuted at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

When Mayor Pigface suddenly goes missing from Clay Hill, Duck Guy decides to replace him with help from The Key to the City. Meanwhile, Red Guy looks for the disappeared mayor and Yellow Guy is upset that his birthday party was cancelled.

  • Art Shift: Much of the Security Song, sung by a key-shaped teacher is animated in the style of a rubberhose cartoon.
  • Birthday Episode: The pilot takes place on Yellow Guy's 38th birthday. However, Yellow Guy spends most of his party being upset, because everyone is too distracted by the mayor's disappearance and Duck slowly turning into a Control Freak. The end of the pilot ends with Yellow Guy's apparent 48th birthday party.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The pilot's ending edges between this and a Happy Ending. The Key to the City is stopped by Yellow Guy and Red Guy, Duck apologizes for his Control Freak nature, and the town is restored back to normal. However, the final shot has everyone spontaneously gushing out their mindless love for fizzy milk, to the confusion of the main trio. Implying that they may be in another Lotus-Eater Machine.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: In line with the intended take on a more topical bent for the series, the whole is basically an allegory for Brexit and anti-immigration policies and xenophobic sentiments.
  • Exotic Equipment: Duck infamously gets an erection he calls "Morgan", which is essentially a pink worm-like thing with a single eyeball at the end.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: During the Security Song, the key lists reasons why Clayhill needs to be protected from strangers, which include them stepping on the townspeoples' toes, pinching them on the legs, peeking inside their lunchboxes, and fiddling with their trash bin lids.
  • Potty Failure: There is a recurring gag of various characters "needing to use the bathroom" and pissing themselves for no clear reason.
  • Rule-Abiding Rebel: Subverted with The Fizzy Milk Jug. At first, he seems like the typical rebel-without-a-cause bad boy, but in reality, he wants nothing to do with breaking the rules and only wants to drink fizzy milk.
  • Stepford Suburbia: Judging by the teaser, Clayhill seems to have this going on.
