- Ancient Astronauts: The Gods of the alternate Roman Empire turn out to be the Malevilus, five beings which feed on death. They gave Rome the technology to expand and later conquer other worlds.
- Body Horror: The Emperor's mother morphs into Magog as a cliffhanger.
- The Brute: Morris, the slave who helps the Doctor for half the story.
- Engineered Public Confession: The Doctor films Magog as they torture him, revealing to Rome who their leaders really are.
- Grand Theft Me: The Emperor's mother Juno is under the control of Magog, leader of the Malevilus. They intend to possess the Emperor when he ascends the throne.
- Human Sacrifice: Prisoners of the Romans are given to the Malevilus, who consume them.
- Royal Brat: Adolphus Caesar. At the end the Doctor advises he be sent to a strict boarding school on Cryos Four.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: Magog, the leader of the Malevilus, is trapped by the Doctor in a pocket dimension in the TARDIS.
- Slave Galley: The Doctor is put in an airship where he and other slaves are forced to row the royal family to the Temple of the Gods.
