Recap / Dinosaurs S 01 E 05 The Howling

Go To

Robbie turns 15 and has to start on the tradition of male dinosaurs howling at the moon, prophesized to bring the end of the world and turn dinosaur against dinosaur if they don't howl at the moon. However, Robbie does not understand the tradition and is also embarrassed by his howl sound. On his first night, Robbie suggests they all skip the howling just once and see what happens, and the moon gets covered by dark clouds, leading everyone to think the world is ending. But when the next day comes, it turns out Robbie was right, but various best friends, including Earl and Roy, continue arguing and fighting like the did before the moon came (as a result of pre-howling syndrome), and Robbie realizes that what the books really mean is that they keep dinosaurs from turning against each other.

This episode includes examples of

  • Birthday Episode: Robbie turns 15 and is given a party.
  • Clifftop Caterwauling: In the end, Robbie stands on top of a cliff and howls.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • On the day before the full moon rises, male dinosaurs get PHS - Pre-Howling Syndrome. Charlene remarks that she's lucky she's a girl.
    • On a more positive note, Robbie's first Howling Day is on his 15th birthday and is treated as a rite of passage with a party. This could be a possible reference to the Latin American tradition of a Quinceañera for teenage girls on their 15th birthdays.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: Everybody thinks this is happening when Robbie convinces the males to skip the howling for once and the moon gets covered by clouds.
  • Feud Episode: Between Earl and Roy as pre-howling syndrome takes effect.
  • Hate Plague: After the Howling fails, all male dinosaurs just randomly start fighting and squabbling with each other. In addition to Earl and Roy, we also see a fight break out between Howard Handupme and Dwayne, the sports anchorman. note  Whether this is the result of the aforementioned "Pre-Howling Syndrome" or the actions of the aforementioned and so-called "Dark Spirit" is never really explained and kind of debatable.
  • Let's Meet the Meat: Earl is disgusted by Roy's eating habits and is able to see and communicate with the mammal Roy is eating, and the mammal agrees and gives some hygiene advice. After the mammal falls out and leaves, Roy tells Earl he embarrassed him in front of his lunch.
