Recap / Degrassi S 2 E 11 Dont Believe The Hype

Go To

They claiming I'm a criminal
But now I wonder how, some people never know
The enemy could be their friend, guardian,
I'm not a hooligan, I rock the party and
Clear all the madness, I'm not a racist
Preach to teach to all ('Cause some, they never had this)
Number one, not born to run about the gun
I wasn't licensed to have one
The minute they see me, fear me
I'm the epitome, of public enemy
Used, abused without clues, I refused to blow a fuse
They even had it on the news
Don't believe the hype
Public Enemy, "Don't Believe the Hype"

Hazel struggles with her heritage during "International Day". J.T. Yorke switches sewing projects with Liberty.

  • Blackmail: After switching projects, Liberty asks J.T. for help with another sewing assignment, threatening to reveal that he's the next "Martha Stewart" if he refuses. She ends up feeling guilty and confesses during class anyways.
  • Embarrassing Hobby: J.T. tries to hide his skill in a sewing class because it's considered a feminine activity. It ends up working out for him in the end, when the girls want him to design skirts for them and let him take their measurements.
  • Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence: One of the first things Hazel does in the episode is give a Fashion Crime ticket to girls wearing Muslim hijabs for wearing "Terrorism" outfits. Later, one of the girls' International Day projects is defaced by someone painting the word "Terrorist" over it.
  • Mistaken for Terrorist: In addition to how often the Muslim students are called this throughout the episode, it turns out that Hazel has been denying her true heritage due to this happening to her in her youth, having been beaten up by others kids at her old school.
  • Pass Fail: Hazel Aden buys jerk chicken from a Jamaican restaurant and puts on a fake International Day presentation to avoid confessing her true heritage, but an Iraqi girl identifies her physical features and last name as Somalian.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: J.T. ends up accepting his talent at sewing when it turns out the girls like him more because of it.
  • You Are What You Hate: Hazel had told everyone that she has Jamaican heritage, when the truth is she's actually Somalian with Muslim roots. She eventually admits she just hates the reputation rather than her actual heritage, and after it's pointed out that she's become just as mean as her old bullies in order to deny the truth, she comes clean about her roots at the end of the episode.
