Recap / Death Note Ep 23 Frenzy

Go To

Kyosuke finds the file with Matsuda's name as Misa's manager, but realizes it's fake when he writes it down in his Death Note and Matsuda does not die on the air. Desperate, Kyosuke makes a deal with Rem to get Shinigami eyes — he'd rather lose half his remaining life than be unmasked and end up on death row. What he doesn't know is that the Kira Task Force is watching him through the bugs — although they are very confused when they see him talking apparently to himself, and writing down a name without doing anything else to kill Matsuda.

Kyosuke leaves for the TV studio to take a look at Matsuda and find his real name. On the way, he kills a policeman that stopped him for speeding, and the Task Force realizes he can now kill with faces alone, like the Second Kira. They immediately mobilize to stop him before he can kill Matsuda.

When Kyosuke reaches the studio, he finds two mannequins and a pre-recorded tape instead of Matsuda and the interviewer. He is then confronted by four members of the Task Force wearing face-concealing helmets. Kyosuke manages to escape and get in the car, but he is stopped by a police blockage led by Aizawa, and Watari's sniping skills.

Tropes used in this episode:

  • Awesomeness by Analysis / Like a Duck Takes to Water: Implied by L when he pilots a helicopter to reach the TV studio. Light comments that he didn't know L could pilot, to which L replies "I rely on my intuition".
  • Battle Butler: Watari is a very competent sniper — he manages to blow Kyosuke's tire with a blow and disarm him with a second, from a helicopter.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: Kyosuke tries to shoot himself when he realizes he's trapped, but Watari shoots his gun away before he can go through.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The police weren't supposed to get involved in the Kira case, but Aizawa organized the police blockade that ultimately stopped Kyosuke.
  • Blasting It Out of Their Hands: Watari does this to Kyosuke.
  • The Bus Came Back: This is the first time we see Aizawa since he left the Task Force.
  • Does Not Like Guns: Aiber. He accepts to take a gun when Kyosuke runs away, but he complains that he really hoped he wouldn't have to.
  • Irony: After obtaining the Shinigami eyes, Kyosuke boasts that now he is the strongest of all. He never gets a chance to use his powers against the Task Force or the police, since they know how to take precautions — in fact, the only time he uses his eyes is his downfall (see Nice Job Fixing It, Villain).
  • Logical Weakness: Kyosuke's Shingami eyes are powerless against the Task Force's motorcycle helmets and police cars with shaded windows.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: If Kyosuke hadn't killed the cop who stopped him for speeding, the Task Force wouldn't have realized that he can now kill with just a face, and wouldn't have mobilized to stop him immediately.
  • Taking the Bullet: Light's father intercepts the bullet that Kyosuke meant for Wedy.
