Recap / Darkwing Duck S 1 E 56 Whirled History

Go To

Bored by her history homework, Gosalyn falls asleep and takes a trip involving great explorers of history.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • And You Were There: Predictably, Gosalyn populates her dreamworld with people she knows in real life. Honker gets mixed together with AstroDuck (the hero from the tv show she was watching before having to begin the homework); Megavolt appears as the Cosmic Overlord (the villain from the same show); Herb and Binkie turn up as the various natives of the area, and the great explorers of history always end up being played by her father, accompanied by the local version of Launchpad.
  • Badly Battered Babysitter: Darkwing suffers a number of injuries and inconveniences trying to protect a sleepwalking Gosalyn from the various dangerous situations into which she blunders.
  • Claiming Via Flag: Gosalyn falls asleep due to boredom with her homework and dreams about visiting history. Multiple scenes involve great explorers (always played by her father) arriving to claim land. In one case, two explorers get into a fight over a flag that one planted.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: When the situation begins getting very perilous, Gosalyn grumbles about why she agreed to come with AstroDuck/Honker anyway. He answers that it's because she's lazy and wanted a way to pass the class without having to read the history book.
  • Running Gag: Christopher Columbus (played by Darkwing) habitually turns up wherever Gosalyn currently is and claims "this India" in the name of Spain.
  • Sleepwalking: Partway through the episode, Gosalyn gets up and walks out a window, still fast asleep and dreaming. Darkwing and Launchpad immediately go to stop her before she can get hurt.
  • Worthless Treasure Twist: Gosalyn hates studying for a history test and fantasizes about going on a quest for the magical Fountain of Knowledge with her favorite comic-book hero. After a long quest, many bad jokes, and a climactic confrontation with a Big Bad, she discovers the Fountain is ... a cardboard prop. As the villain said, "What? You thought you could drink from a fountain and get smarter?"
