Jessica is planning a fundraiser for a bug species, and asks Diana to sing. One problem: Diana is a horrible singer.

Tropes

  • The B Grade: Diana has not been instantly good at everything, but learning to sing is the first thing she has not been able to improve at just through practice.
  • Broken Aesop: While Jess is correct that Diana doesn't have to be good at everything, she claims that Diana can't learn to become a good singer "because it's a natural talent". In reality, it certainly is possible to get better at singing over time through practice. Even the best singers in the world don't automatically get all the notes right without training their voices.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Diana uses the Siren's Conch to make it seem like her voice has improved, but when she sings Jess's song about the cockroaches the conch's enchantment causes Oliver to free them, leading them to rampage all over town. However, Diana's bad singing voice happens to mimic the call of the roach queen, and leads them back into their cages.
  • Face Your Fears: Subverted: As the roaches swarm all over the city, Kara psyches herself up to finally face her fear of roaches... but then freaks out when she thinks one of them got in her hair.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Diana's singing voice is ear-splittingly bad.
  • I Have This Friend: Diana pulls this on Julia about how she was bad at one thing that isn't even that important.
  • Ignored Aesop: Diana takes Jessica telling her that she doesn't have to be good at singing as a challenge to get better at it.
  • Shout-Out: In trying to comfort Diana, Julia points out various classical mythology figures who were bad at stuff. Perseus slayed Medusa, but was bad at discus (killing his grandfather with one); Odysseus was a war hero, but was bad with directions (getting lost at sea for 10 years); and the sirens were great singers, but their enchanting singing tended to make them bad friends.
  • Skewed Priorities: Jessica equates "invasive" with "endangered", and equates the invasive insect with invasive humans.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Kara's fear of cockroaches is once again on display.
