Recap / DC Super Hero Girls 2019 S 1 E 37 Living The Nightmare

Go To

At a sleepover, Zee finds a gremlin giving her friends nightmares and chases him through their bad dreams.

Tropes:

  • Absurd Phobia:
    • Diana is the princess of a warrior society, raised since birth as a soldier to conquer all enemies. But she's scared of teddy bears. Not the real bears she cites as the source of dread behind them, but teddy bears specifically.
    • Barbara is afraid of sharks—specifically, flying sharks.
    • Kara fears every kind of cockroach imaginable. Not only regular roaches, but also gigantic-sized roaches and anthropomorphic roaches.
  • Bears Are Bad News: In her dream, Diana rants about how people put effigies of bears - one of Mankind's oldest and deadliest enemies - in the beds of children.
  • Beneath the Mask: Discussed by Fuseli, who likes Jessica's nightmare for her fears running very deep.
  • Brought Down to Normal: The dream gremlin has no powers when he's dragged out of the dream world.
  • Burger Fool: The dream gremlin's nightmare is being stuck in a fast food job.
  • Call-Back: Zee's Evil Twin has blue eyes much like Zee herself had in "Illusions Of Grandeur" when she cast a spell in anger against the Ace of Spades. The music that played when Zee cast the spell even plays when her Evil Twin emerges from the locked box.
  • Dream Walker: Both the dream gremlin and Zee are able to cross over the other's dreams.
  • Enemy Within: Zee thought she had no fears and insecurities to speak of but, according to Fuseli, someone else sealed her fear of her own dark side away and he unleashes it against her.
  • Flying Sea Food Special: Batgirl's phobia is being chased by a swarm of flying sharks.
  • Foreshadowing: Fuseli claims this when discovering that someone else magically locked away Zee's fears for her.
  • Funny Background Event: While chasing the dream gremlin, Zatara passes by one of Kara's dreams, which show her running from a cockroach riding a larger cockroach trying to lasso her.
  • Fusion Dance: Zee overcomes both her dark side and her fear of it by accepting the full potential of herself and fusing with it.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Once Zee accepts her fears as part of herself, her Fusion Dance form is powerful enough to snag Fusili out of the Dream Dimension and into the real world where he's powerless. He's then forced to live his OWN nightmare where he must now work in Burrito Bucket under Babs.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • We get another mention of the Shark Repellant Bat Spray, which like in its source material is kept with sprays for other absurd sea creature attacks.
    • Fuseli's entire shtick and being a powerless nobody out in the real world are like a kiddie version of Dr. Destiny.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: The dream gremlin feeds on the fear of his victims. Zee makes his own fear reality: being trapped in a dimension where he has no power and forced to survive in it.
  • "Not Wearing Pants" Dream: In a variation, Karen is wearing bunny pajamas in front of a crowd in her dream.
  • Performance Anxiety: Karen's nightmare is about speaking in public.
  • Sdrawkcab Speech: Played with for Zee's Evil Twin. Her dialogue is spoken backwards for the recording and then reversed, much like in Twin Peaks.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The dream gremlin is named Fuseli, after painter Henry Fuseli, who's best known painting, The Nightmare, depicts a similar creature sitting on top of a sleeping woman.
      • His introduction to Zee has him talk in the three-sentence style of Darkwing Duck, where his name is given in the third and last sentence.
    • In Babs' nightmare, she's attacked by flying sharks.
    • Karen's nightmare includes wearing pink-bunny jammies from Aunt Carol, like another kid's bunny pajamas from Aunt Clara. ("He looks like a pink nightmare!")
  • "What Do They Fear?" Episode: Each of the girls has nightmares based on what they fear the most. Kara dreams of cockroaches, Karen of public speaking, Diana of teddy bears, Jessica of not being good enough, and Babs of sharks. Zee claims that she has no fears, but the gremlin produces an evil version of herself representing what she fears most: her dark side. Zee defeats it by accepting her dark side as part of her. Zee then traps Fusili in the real world, where now powerless, he must work at Burrito Bucket.
