Solitary Man

Directed by Rob Hardy
Written by Ryan Gibson & Kimberly Ann Harrison
Prentiss: Tennessee Williams said, "We're all of us sentenced to solitary confinement inside our own skins, for life."
A trucker looks for a mother for his daughter. He does this by kidnapping women he is interested in and locking them up. When they turn out to have traits he doesn't like, such as not being crazy about a child they haven't even met, he kills them and dumps the bodies in different states. Eventually he kidnaps a woman who is already a mother, and murders his daughter's adoptive mother. When the FBI catches up with him, he kills himself.

Tropes

  • Child Hater: The UnSub considers women who don't want children right now to be this, and he considers it a grave moral failing, which he punishes by death.
  • Creepy Child: Jody has many drawings of a king, a princess, and several dead queens. It seems like she understands that the stories he tells her are about real people.
  • Insane Troll Logic:
    • While they're used to this from UnSubs, the BAU seem surprised to find that the UnSub likely murders women because he's lonely.
    • The UnSub figures you have to be religious and desperately want children to be a good mother. Subverted in that you'd probably have to to be a good mother to your abductor's kid after he threatens to kill you if you aren't.
  • Morality Pet: Subverted with the UnSub's daughter, who is his motivation for kidnapping women, and then killing them when he finds that they would not be ideal mothers to Jody.
  • Schmuck Bait: The first victim we see has car troubles and pulls over, but is reluctant to step out of the car because of heavy rain. When a stranger shows up almost immediately all willing to fix her engine, she lets him open the hood… and then he disappears, so she gets out of the car to look for him.

Morgan: Christopher Lasch said, "Family is a haven in a heartless world."
