Spectator Slowing

An UnSub is a photographer wanting to capture explosions, so he does what anyone would do in that situation and sends people bombs in the mail, then sets up a camera nearby.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Call-Back: The UnSub sends mail bombs to families, like in Won't Get Fooled Again, the third episode in the first season.
  • Evil Is Petty: The UnSub's morivation is that Rhonda's mother carelessly stepped on a bouquet of flowers that he had left on a lawn. He left them in memory of his mother, but there was no indication of that.
  • Hollywood Board Games: Matt stays home to look after his pregnant wife and kids. It occurs to him to play a board game he bought in Thailand years ago with his children. Cool Old Guy Rossi jokingly warns him that if he deviates from video games, it would be at his own peril. This references how kids these days prefer video games over more traditional games. Fortunately, Matt and his family still have fun.
  • Like Father, Like Son: The UnSub has the violent streak his abusive father had.
  • Punny Title: The title is a play on "spectator showing", alluding to the fact that the UnSub is interested in photographing the explosions.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The quote at the beginning is from Margaret Mitchell.
Life is under no obligation to give us what we want.
    • The victims are surnamed Kirkman.
    • Matt tells his daughter Lily the story of Madame Butterfly. She wonders if the American sailor in the story was Popeye.
