Tropes for "Serpent of Evil River"

  • Beautiful Singing Voice: For being a big, scary sea serpent, Carmen is revealed to have a lovely voice.
  • Benevolent Monsters: Although her appearance comes off as frightening, Carmen proves to be a gentle creature who only wants to sing "Habanera" to her heart's content. She even tugs along the boat to bring Courage and Muriel safely home.
  • Bilingual Bonus: At the climax, Carmen deliberately sings the last line of "Habanera" so loudly that it causes the Stalactites to fall around the captain in a cage-like fashion. For those who don't know, the last line translates to "Watch out", as though letting both the Captain and the audience know she's not to be trifled with.
  • Sea Serpents: Courage and his owners cross paths with Carmen, a huge sea serpent who's much more interested in singing for them than eating them.
  • Symbolism: When the Captain first greets Courage and his family, he looks like an upstanding business man who just wants to take them on a leisurely boat ride. Once they're far from shore, he sheds not only his kindly demeanor, but takes of his disguise to reveal a shady and obsessive game hunter.

Muriel wakes Courage up to go and check on Eustace. After he groggily opens the bathroom door, he finds Eustace transformed into a giant kangaroo monster. He calmly closes the door and manages to make it all the way back to Muriel's bedroom before screaming in terror.
