Recap / Cloak & Dagger (2018) S02E08 "Two Player"

Go To

Tandy and Evita must go to great lengths when Tyrone is put in a dangerous situation. Meanwhile, Adina looks to someone surprising for help.

  • All Myths Are True: The Loa are very real.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Ty is saved, but Chantelle dies, Evita marries Samedi, which forces her to break up with Ty. Adina murders the repentant Connors. And Tandy's mom has relapsed into alcohol and prescription drugs.
  • Black-and-White Morality: Ty can't stop playing the game because it uncomplicates everything his life has become. No grey areas. No deeper meanings. Just clear bad guys he can fight with his fists.
  • Chess with Death: Baron Samedi runs a metaphorical arcade and Tyrone is a prize so Tandy obviously assumes that she has to beat him in some kind of game. However, it turns it she has to make Ty stop playing... we never find out if she succeeded or not.
  • Confessional: Adina confesses murdering Connors to Father Delgado.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Andre promising that it will be the last time hurting Lia is eerily similar to what abusive men often tell their victims/girlfriends after they hurt them.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Andre finally figures out his veve, sitting in his car with the paper folded in half, a street light shining through it reveals that it is, of course, a musical phrase.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Connors, despite truly trying to atone for his sins, gets murdered by Adina, who just can't let got of her hatred of him.
  • Jerkass Gods: Samedi acts much less friendly than Papa Legba.
  • Journey to the Center of the Mind: The premise of the episode, once again. Tandy wants to help Tyrone wake up, meanwhile Brigid and Mayhem reach an agreement.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After having led so many girls into being victimized by Andre, it really comes off as karmic justice when Lia is used up by him herself.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Tandy breaks down crying when she discovers that her harsh words have driven her mother back to drinking and taking drugs.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Ty's soul is represented by a figurine of him wearing his comic book counterpart's cloak.
    • The virtual design of Andre is D'Spayre's original design from the comics.
    • Tandy and Tyrone's virtual avatars also look like their comic incarnations. The game also references their comic origins by having them gain powers from "radioactive heroin."
    • A wannabe John pulls up next to Lia and asks if she knows "where a fella can get some... coffee".
  • Not So Above It All: Tandy actually starts to enjoy herself for a short while in the video game section.
  • Passing the Torch: Chantelle's spirit urges Evita to carry on her duties.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Adina just can't look past Connors' deeds and murders him, despite knowing that she might eventually land in jail for it.
  • Sadistic Choice: Evita has to marry Samedi to free Tyrone, since Tyrone is failing to do it himself.
  • Spirit Advisor: Chantelle returns from the afterlife to encourage Evita to accept her destiny as mambo.
  • Split-Personality Merge: Brigid concedes that her way of doing things isn't enough to stop Andre and thus she allows Mayhem to take over her body.
  • Sudden Video-Game Moment: The "Duel To D'Spayre" scenes.
  • Sweet Tooth: Papa Legba is one. Tandy uses a chocolate bar to pay him, while Brigid has Spearmint Gum.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Tandy calls out Tyrone for wanting to stay in Samedi's realm and continue to play video games while there are people in the real world worrying for him.
