Go To

The crew talk about wartime espionage involving a mole that was feeding the British information in WWII about the Germans.

Article of Conversation: Juan Pujol Garcia

Tropes:

  • Double Agent: Juan was one, though interestingly, he was never employed by the British until much later, and he just started feeding them information:
Gary (acting like a British army sergeant): That's dreadfully rude of him, but jolly useful!
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Juan was given the codename of "Bovril" by the British, which Gary considers it to be a bit unorthodox. Tom then clarifies that they later changed it to "Garbo".
  • Epic Fail: As Matt points out, the Germans believed Juan's intelligence as it was correct to radio broadcasts they had heard, essentially confirming that he was trustworthy, and in some cases, he artificially delayed his information so he looked more credible, which Gary and Matt voice approval of.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Gary makes the joke that Juan was a spy that was placed in England to look after sheep, and was "therefore, a Shepherd Spy!"; Cue audience groan.
  • Recycled In Space: Chris says "In space" in a subdued tone after his name is called out by Tom during the intro.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Gary's intro has him do the "Nice to see you, to see you nice!" opener the late Bruce Forsythe used to do on his game shows.
    • To QI, which Tom namedrops when Gary says that there was one Garcia (making a pun off of his name; Juan).
    • To the James Bond series, specifically to their use of Magic Plastic Surgery, as Gary imagines a scenario where Juan completely changes voice and face, and Tom explains that This Is Reality.
