Recap / Chucky S 1 E 3 I Like To Be Hugged

Go To

While reminiscing about his first murder, Chucky doesn’t have to try hard to convince Jake to give into his temptation to murder Lexy after the hulmination of her tasteless Halloween costume.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Actor Allusion: Alyvia Alyn Lind hosts a silent disco.
  • And This Is for...: After cornering Lexy in her room with the intent on murdering her, Chucky says "This is for Jake."
  • Asshole Victim: Oliver, The Bully for Jake.
  • Backhanded Apology: Lexy's "apology" to Jake for her prank in the previous episode basically consists of her trivializing the incident and putting the blame on Jake (saying "I guess I could sort of see" why dressing up as someone's recently-deceased abusive father could be "taken the wrong way"), making excuses for her own behavior, apologizing for the way Jake felt rather than what she herself did, bringing up Jake previously insulting her as an equivalency... and, finally, implying that she's the better, humbler person for seeking forgiveness, which most people don't seem to notice.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Throughout the episode’s flashbacks, it’s easy to assume that Chucky’s first victim would be the Hackensack Slasher, possibly killing him in self-defense. It isn’t until the end that we see his first kill was actually his own mother.
  • Do Wrong, Right: The Hackensack Slasher complimented a young Chucky on his first kill, but advises him on covering his tracks as he wipes the blood off Chucky's blade.
  • Call-Back:
    • Chucky accuses Jake of having completion anxiety, which is what Nica accused him of having in Curse of Chucky.
    • Caroline watching the news with Chucky is one to the first Child's Play, in which Andy tells his babysitter that Chucky wants to watch the news.
  • Country Matters: After cornering Lexy, Chucky calls her a bleeped-out name. According to IMDb, the insult is "cunt bag".
  • Everyone Has Standards: Junior confronts Lexy for the prank she pulled on Jake at the Halloween party, telling her she crossed a line.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: All the kids dance to music on their headphones. Because of this, no one notices Oliver being stabbed to death, or a fire breaking out upstairs.
  • Karma Houdini: The Hackensack Slasher is never caught after committing his murder spree.
  • Matricide: Chucky's first murder victim was his own mother.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Jake feels this way while visiting his parents' graves and starts to regret what he's done.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Chucky's mother made multiple fatal mistakes when the Hackensack Slasher came to her and Chucky's house. First off, she chose a poor hiding place (a big empty closet) and in there she was suffocating Chucky (first covering his mouth and nose to keep him quiet then hugging him too tightly) ignoring his pleas he can't breathe all the while she herself is breathing loudly and panicking even muttering "Oh my god!" drawing the Slasher to their location. Chucky sees that he had no choice but to do her in as to save his own skin from the Slasher with the bonus of earning his respect.
  • Pet the Dog: It is shown that Lexy does care about her little sister Caroline deep down by going out of her way to get Chucky from Jake to calm her down and singing her to sleep.
  • Red Herring: In the flashback, after Chucky explains that it's important to find the right victim, it shows a bratty girl whining to Charles to cut his birthday cake while the latter glares at her. It's assumed that she would be his first murder, but this turns out not to be the case.
  • The Reveal: Jake asks Chucky what made him a killer, to which Chucky starts talking about his first kill, and explaining the tactics of what it takes to be a killer. At the end of the episode, we learn the identity of his first victim: his own mother.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: We see that Lexy's prank in the previous episode wasn't without repercussions; it was recorded by people who attended Oliver's party, and it quickly went viral to the point that it got the attention of Miss Fairchild and Principal McVey, who proceeded to not only show it to Lexy's parents, but Jake's aunt and uncle.
  • Tantrum Throwing: Caroline does this when she wants Chucky.
  • Tears of Fear: After being cornered by Chucky, Lexy cries in fear.
  • The Ending Changes Everything: While Chucky was telling Jake who his first kill was, there is a flashback sequence describing a psychotic serial killer rampaging throughout the town. After his father was grisly stabbed to death by the killer, one could be forgiven if they thought Chucky killed him as vengeance. However, when the killer rips the closet door open, it turns out that Chucky's first kill was his own mother.
  • Title Drop: The title comes from one of Chucky's doll quotes.
  • Villain Respect: The Hackensack Slasher gifts the young Charles a switchblade for his first murder.
  • Wants a Prize for Basic Decency: Lexy expects Jake to give her Chucky in return for apologizing, and is infuriated when he refuses, meaning that she probably wouldn't have gone through with it at all if there hadn't been an ulterior motive.
