Recap / Chowder S 1 E 20 Mung On The Rocks

Go To

"Mung On The Rocks" is the 20th episode of Chowder, first airing March 6, 2008.

Mung takes Chowder and Schnitzel fishing to get some produce for an upcoming dish. Truffles stops them on the way out, asking expectantly if Mung has forgotten anything. Mung confidently declares that he forgets nothing and leaves. When he returns, Truffles is furious with him, pointing out that he had forgotten that today was their 450th Anniversary, and he left her alone virtually all day. Truffles angrily calls out Mung, accusing him of loving the kitchen more than her and kicks him out of their bedroom, forcing Mung to spend the night in Chowder's.

Mung reassures Chowder that Truffles will be in a better mood tomorrow, only to find that the next morning Truffles brushes him off completely, not even bothering to berate him like she normally. This absolutely crushes Mung, as he becomes completely depressed to the point that he can't cook properly anymore. Sensing that things are wrong, Chowder decides to take matters into his own hands by seeking advice from the only person he can think of: Gazpacho.

After presenting the issue to Gazpacho, he provides the only bit of advice he can think of: Fizzy River Juice Fruit, a sort of canned soda. However, on the way back, Chowder ends up shaking the soda a bit too much, causing it to become too fizzy, causing a minor tsunami of fizzy river juice that washes away Truffles and Mung. After saving each other, or rather Truffles saving Mung, the two of them finally manage to reconcile and end up spending some quality time together, showing that despite all their bickering and arguing, they truly do love each other.

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: The biggest takeaway from this episode. Despite their constant arguments, this is the first episode to show just how much Mung and Truffles love each other. Mung especially, as he becomes more and more depressed without Truffles, to the point that his skin turns green and starts to waste away.
  • Chirping Crickets: The sound effect is used when Mung tries to talk to Truffles, only for her to stay completely silent and ignore him. Then it turn out the noise was actually coming from an actual cricket who was just there to pick up an order.
  • Forgotten Anniversary: The main conflict of the episode has Mung forget his and Truffles 450th Anniversary, with Truffles being more upset with him than she usually is.
  • I Have This Friend: Chowder invokes this tropes when going to Gazpacho for help, and it then gets Played for Laughs.
Chowder: A certain friend of mine, a person I look up to, well a certain mean lady who's making him sad.
Gazpacho: *gasps* Is this mean lady mad most of the time...?
    Chowder: Yeah, she is.
Gazpacho: And this friend was just trying to enjoy a tasty snack, when the mean lady's all, "Did you eat the last pizza pocket?" And he's all like, "No, I'm eating the last four pizza pockets." And the mean lady call him a selfish lazy knucklehead? Can you believe that?!
Chowder: What are you talking about...?
Gazpacho: You're not talking about my mother...?
    Chowder: No.
Gazpacho: Oh. Well... *sniffs* neither was I.
  • Oh, Crap!: Mung's reaction when he finally notices the giant banners saying "Happy 450th Anniversary".
    Mung: Ohh. beat I forgot...
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
  • Silent Treatment: Truffles' way of dealing with Mung the morning after. It's quite jarring.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Mung realizes he forgot their anniversary, Truffles wastes no time tearing him a new one with words.
Truffles: All I ask for is one day a year. ONE!
    Mung: I know, but-
Truffles: But you love this kitchen more than me!
Mung: That's not true. I love you both.
Truffles: Oh, really?! Well if you love this kitchen so much, Why Don't You Marry It?!
