Recap / Castlevania 2017 S 2 E 5 Last Spell

Go To

Camilla storms around the castle looking for Godbrand, while Isaac silently releases his ashes into the wind. She's committed her troops to Braila, and pushes Hector to help her. Hector talks to Isaac (and sends some mooks to the Belmont estate), Isaac talks to Dracula. Dracula flashes back to the time he once isolated and slaughtered a group of 40 merchants who'd insulted him, saying he no longer has that kind of energy. When all his advisors bring up the idea of moving the castle, he finally agrees, either not caring about or not seeing the oncoming betrayal.

Sypha discovers a half finished spell, developed by a Belmont, which can be used to forcefully move and trap Dracula's castle. She explains that the Speakers know the original human language, in defiance of God, before thinking that a banging is his wrath. On the contrary; the nightspawn Hector dispatched are knocking on their door...

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Disproportionate Retribution: Dracula once killed 40 merchants for insulting him
  • Dramatic Irony: Camilla storms the castle asking for Godbrand when the audience knows that Isaac killed him last episode.
  • Funny Background Event: Isaac is shown scattering Godbrand's ashes while inside, Carmilla rages about not finding him.
  • Hell Is That Noise: Quite literally when the Night Beasts reach the Belmont estate, though Sypha believes it's God trying to smite her.
    Sypha: See? God hates me!
(pounding intensifies followed by the screams of the Damned)
    Alucard: That's probably not God.
    Sypha: (look of horrified realization)
  • Kick the Dog: Carmilla immediately starts abusing and mocking Hector when she feels he's committed enough to her plan that he can't back out.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Trevor finds the longsword of his ancestor Leon.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Sypha explains that the Speakers maintain an oral tradition specifically because they don't trust God after he forced humanity apart for building the tower of Babel. Hence why she can speak the original human language.
  • Villainous Friendship: Discussed and played with.
    • Hector naively seems to think he's friends with Dracula, Carmilla and Isaac, but of them, only Dracula considers him a friend (and even then, still lied to him to secure his services), Isaac barely puts up with him as another ally of Dracula, and Carmilla's just manipulating him.
    • Dracula and Isaac play the trope straight. Isaac is the only one Dracula revealed his entire plan to in the previous episode, and in turn Isaac told Dracula of everyone's scheming before the rest of the council come to run the idea they've been discussing behind his back by him.
