  • Angry Collar Grab: Milworthy does this to the police officer at the station to press from him the name of the ship with his kobolds on it.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Sophie delivers a speech at Parliament which sounds like she would go against her father and try to help overcome the differences between the species in the city. But then she ends with the conclusion that this is not possible at all.
  • Character Shilling: Sophie's speech at Parliament is applauded by her followers and Jonah comments how she's the most magnificent creature he's ever laid eyes on.
  • Diegetic Switch: In the opening scene, Runyan Milworthy plays one of Aisling's songs on a gramophone which then switches to a high-quality version on the soundtrack.
  • The Drunken Sailor: All the sailors Milworthy encounters at the port are drunk.
  • Mistaken for Servant: Agreus repeatedly endures this as a guest of Imogen, since many Fauns are employed by rich humans (including the Spurnroses' housekeeper).
  • Never Recycle a Building: Or never reshuffle beds in an orphanage so that our hero can find his old bed at the same spot in the sleeping hall some 30 years later.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Philo realizes how much he is in the same situation as Closet Gay coroner Morange who lived with his Dark Secret for all his life, always in fear of being discovered.
  • Pensieve Flashback: Philo has flashbacks to his childhood at the orphanage with his current self present in the room.
  • The Reveal: Philo finds out that Aisling is his mother.
