Recap / Carmen Sandiego S 2 E 03 The Daisho Caper

Go To

Shadowsan returns to Matsumoto, Japan to atone for his actions as a youth. Lady Dokuso plans to use this moment to attain glory and win Shadowsan's vacant spot on the V.I.L.E. Council.

Tropes

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: It is implied Dokuso and her main agents have this against the former's poison as all of them are using the poison-laced chopsticks without issue, but seconds after Shadow-san holds them, he is hit by the toxin.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This episode is focused on Shadowsan's past.
  • The Atoner: Shadow-san reveals he must make some form of amends to his brother by returning his sword back to him.
  • Bittersweet Ending: More bitter than sweet: while Shadowsan was able to return the sword and apologize to his brother, his relationship with said brother is too broken to be mended and perhaps will never be mended.
  • Bookends: When Shadowsan stole the sword, he ran away after he couldn't find the heart to attack his brother. When he returns to return the sword and ask to atone the crimes, his brother just walks away.
  • Chekhov's Exhibit: The item in question is the Daisho with one sword stolen and missing long ago by Shadowsan and the other getting stolen by Lady Dokuso before both swords were retrieved back by Carmen Sandiego.
  • Chekhov's Gag: One of Lady Dokuso's men mentions Shadow-san once used chopsticks to defeat his enemies.
    • This is tried first by Shadowsan using them again here to strike a pressure point in the back of the neck of one of Dokuso's men.
    • It is tried moments later by Dokuso when she reveals she anticipated Shadowsan using the implements and had them all coated in a paralytic toxin absorbed through the skin when held.
  • Clean Food, Poisoned Fork: The chopsticks that one goon was using to eat his food, and Shadowsan would later use as a weapon, were poisoned. Not that Shadowsan is worried about this since he was only the bait.
  • The Dreaded: Lady Dokuso's men all fear facing Shadowsan, telling stories of how he has taken down other rival criminal organizations. Dokuso even warns them to believe every story said of the man.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted. When Shadowsan returns the stolen swords and admits his wrongful actions, seeking to just undo the harm and not asking for forgiveness, his brother is still wounded from what Shadowsan did and silently walks away from him. Forgiveness does not come easy, and perhaps it may never come.
  • Hard Truth Aesop: If you do something that absolutely fractures your relationship with your family, even if you do atone for your crimes it doesn't erase the fact that you did it and you may never find forgiveness.
  • Internal Reveal: Shadowsan's given name is Suhara.
  • Promotion to Parent: For as long as Shadow-san can remember, his brother raised him.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: A mook decides to play "Suspicioius Minds" on a karaoke machine. The song is still playing when Shadowsan kicks ass.
  • Stealth Expert:
    • Befitting one trying to replace Shadowsan, Lady Dokuso shows this by placing her poison trap in a simple plain object.
    • Shadowsan shows off skills at the end when he sneaks back into Matsumoto Castle and returns both stolen swords when his brother was leaving the room.
  • Stealth Pun: Boston-natives Ivy and Zack sing to "More than a Feeling" by the band...Boston.
  • Sticky Situation: Paper Star comes in contact with glue coated paper lanterns, courtesy of Zack.

Suhara and Hideo

Before he joined VILE, he started off as a delinquent named Suhara. He was raised by his older brother, Hideo, who lived a responsible life as a scholar of Japanese history. Suhara, meanwhile, eventually went down a path of darkness that would mold him as the criminal stealing artifacts. That man was known as Shadowsan.
