Sakura attends an athletic meet festival with Tomoyo, Toya and Yukito, with the four of them expecting Sakura and Toya's father and Tomoyo's mother later on in the day. In the meantime, Sakura enjoys the day, participating in the events. Syaoran is also in attendance, seeking to compete in the games as well. Later on, Fujitaka arrives in time for lunch while Tomoyo's mother, Sonomi, comes just a little bit after. When the two meet, they are unexpectedly surprised to see one another. It is soon revealed that they have met before.
During all of this, there has been a constant falling of flower petals seemingly from out of nowhere that noone really takes much notice of, until the falling turns swiftly into a storm. Sakura quickly realises that it has to be the work of a Clow Card and resolves to capture it before everyone at the event is swamped in an overflow of petals.
In the falling of petals came these tropes:
- Anticlimax: It turns out that the Flower card is just celebrating the festival in its own way and surrenders to being returned to its card form serenely.
- Big Damn Heroes: As the volume of falling flower petals continue to rise and flood the grounds, Toya and Yukito take over holding the finishing line ribbon for the parents' race from Chiharu and Rika before the two smaller girls are overwhelmed by it.
- Big Eater: Yukito gobbles up blocks of food without taking a single breath.
- Butt-Monkey: Aside from competing in the obstacle course and accepting Sakura's invitation to lunch, this is Syaoran's role in the episode.
- Cuteness Proximity: When the Flower card first sees Sakura, it is inspired to dance with her.
- Determinator: Sonomi has been attempting to prove she's better than Fujitaka at something for years because she just cannot stand how perfect he was to her late cousin.
- Failure Montage: Sakura is the only competitor that successfully makes it to the finishing line of the obstacle course.
- A Friend in Need: Sakura invites Tomoyo to have lunch with her and her family to prevent her from feeling lonely after Sonomi is running late. She also extends a similar invitation to Syaoran.
- Friendly Enemy: Fujitaka would rather not be an enemy to Sonomi, but for as long as she continues to hate him and seeks to outmatch him, he will always respond by meeting her challenges with his best effort as he feels doing anything less would be an insult to her.
- The Flower is a very playful Clow Card.
- Hammerspace: Lampshaded by Sakura when she asks where Tomoyo was hiding her phone when they're wearing gym uniforms.
- I Let You Win: Averted. Fujitaka refuses to enact this trope out of respect for Sonomi.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Tomoyo reveals that she loves Sakura, but doesn't tell her because it's more important that Sakura is happy than that Sakura knows.
- Kissing Cousins: Subverted both times:
- Sonomi wanted Nadeshiko to love her this way, but Nadeshiko didn't and fell for her teacher instead.
- Tomoyo has a crush on Sakura, who is oblivious to her cousin's feelings.
- Like Father, Unlike Son: Tomoyo, like her mother, is in love with her cousin, but she doesn't treat anyone else as a rival for Sakura's affections.
- May–December Romance: Toya reveals that the fifteen-year old Nadeshiko married Fujitaka, who was 25 years old and her teacher. Downplayed, as the gap is only 10 years but that gap occurs for Nadeshiko at a rather precarious age and with someone in a position of authority over her, keeping the spirit of the trope intact.
- Obliviously Evil: The Flower card, as shown when she dances with Sakura. Kero explains that she was attracted to the celebrations and just wanted to participate.
- Passionate Sports Girl: Sakura loves participating in the athletic meet.
- The Rival:
- Sonomi has hated Fujitaka for years, claiming that he stole Nadeshiko from her.
- Sakura and Syaoran seek to outdo each other at the obstacle course.
- Running Gag: Sakura + baton twirling = ouch!
- Say My Name: KINOMOTO-SENSEI!!!
- Sore Loser: Sonomi rages at Fujitaka when he beats her.
- Spanner in the Works: An unknowing Yamazaki prevents Syaoran from aiding in the capture of the Flower card.
- The Stoic: In the years since Nadeshiko's death, a furious Sonomi was never able to understand why Fujitaka keeps smiling despite the loss of his dear wife. He finally gives her an answer; he does it because Nadeshiko asked him to never cry.
- Teacher/Student Romance: How Fujitaka and Nadeshiko's love story began.
- Wham Line: Sonomi's maiden name is revealed to be Amamiya, the same maiden name Sakura's mother Nadeshiko shared. Toya informs Yukito that the two were actually first cousins. This leads to the unspoken revelation that Sakura and Tomoyo are related.
