Tropes

  • Butterfly of Doom: Or "The Butterfinger Effect" as called by Nurf. He believes that Space Kid's change to racing will have an effect on Camp Campbell's social environment.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: While the camera zoomed in on Ered's face when she decided to take up LARPing, Nerris's clothes somehow changed from her standard elf wizard outfit to a band geek outfit.
  • Personality Swap: What the Butterfinger Effect ultimately causes. The campers all start switching personalities and societal roles with each other; while they aren't exact replicas, the personalities have enough similarities with those of their original owners to somewhat determine who switched with who. The only one left untouched was Max, most likely because his acceptance of the situation reversed the effect before it could affect him.
    • Space Kid, of course, becomes obsessed with racing and speed in general, suggesting he switched with Ered, who loves extreme sports.
    • Nurf in turn becomes the new Space Kid after he tries to steal Space Kid's old bowl helmet to try and force him back into his old personality. Unlike the other campers, Nurf didn't necessarily change personalities; instead, the bowl got stuck to his head and he became the subject of mockery like Space Kid used to be.
    • Preston becomes a football jock and a bully, making him a more socially acceptable Nurf.
    • Campbell became a coach that is now training Preston and obsessed with leaving behind a decent legacy. This is the only personality that doesn't have a clear-cut original owner. Best guess is Dolph, as Dolph has made remarks about becoming a famous artist and leaving behind a legacy.
    • Dolph is an interesting case; he adopted Campbell's old personality, becoming a money-obsessed accountant and possibly a conman.
    • Nerris became a band kid, so she either switched with Preston or Dolph. Most likely Preston, as music is a performing art and band kids tend to be lumped with theater kids in popular media portrayals of high school.
    • Ered turned into a LARPer, so she switched with Nerris.
    • Harrison started wearing a similar sweater to Max and was making cutting, cynical, sarcastic insults and remarks at the entire situation, meaning he adopted Max's personality. This suggests Max might have adopted his role as a stage magician if the Butterfinger Effect had gotten to him.
    • Neil and Nikki switched with each other. Neil went feral while Nikki became a scientist.
    • Despite being Demoted to Extra for the episode, a brief scene shows that the counselors and Quartermaster were also affected. Quartermaster turned into Gwen, who turned into David, who turned into Quartermaster.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Nurf himself is the one that ultimately triggers the titular Butterfinger Effect to affect the entire camp after he tries to return Space Kid back to normal.
  • Status Quo Is God: Just as Max has decided to accept the changes in Camp Campbell, everyone else goes back to the way they were.
