Tropes

  • Grass is Greener: Calvin feels like being a tiger would be better than being a human kid, and tries to live as a tiger for an afternoon. He quickly discovers it's extremely boring (partially because Hobbes doesn't really do much to teach him how to actually be one, but Calvin isn't equipped to actually live like one either) and goes back to being a kid.
  • The Obi-Wannabe: Hobbes tries to teach Calvin how to be a tiger, but he doesn't do a good job.
  • Ostentatious Secret: When Calvin reads that tigers are secretive, Hobbes boasts that he knows a lot of secrets and that he won't tell Calvin any of them, which drives Calvin crazy. Hobbes eventually gives Calvin a hint, which implies that his parents bought him at the flea market for a nickel.
  • The Teaser: The arc opens with Calvin's dad messing with Calvin about his bath time, which leads into Calvin's dis-satisfaction with being a human kid and wanting to try being a tiger.
  • This Is My Side: After learning that tigers are territorial, Calvin chooses a large boulder as the demarcation of his and Hobbes’ territories. Calvin brags about how much better his territory is, so Hobbes rolls the rock over and declares that Calvin’s side is now smaller.
