"A Man a Mile" is the fifth episode of Season 1. It originally aired November 3, 2004.

Synopsis:

A miner is found dead in a water tunnel 700 feet below the city, while above ground the death of a 16 yr old prep school girl is investigated.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Ear Ache: In the course of the investigation, detectives learn that one miner bit off part of another one's ear.
  • Hand Wave: Danny asks Mac why they're investigating the death on the job site instead of OSHA. Mac explains that, ordinarily, it would be OSHA but since the deceased actually worked above ground but was found in the tunnel without protective gear, it falls under their purview due to possible foul play as opposed to a work-related accident.
  • Man Bites Man: Upon learning that one man bit off part of another's ear, Danny says the guy got "Tysoned."
  • Snobby Hobbies: The perp in the B-case turns out to be a prep-school student who had befriended the victim, a poorer classmate. She kills her out of jealousy because her father had not only invited the girl to join them on a fox hunt trip to Europe, but had also afforded her the privilege of being "blooded" note  instead of his own daughter.
  • Title Drop: As one miner says,
You know how a Sandhog measures progress? A man a mile. 'Cause that's the death rate down there. Electrocutions, cave-ins, decapitations. Every mile of rock we move, we lose one of our own.
  • Useless Security Cameras: Zig-Zagged. The nightclub in the teenage girl's case doesn't have any security cameras - the owner says they're bad for business, so Stella and Aiden look at footage from those of the surrounding industrial companies, and see the girl going in as well as meeting a man in the area behind the club.
