On her way out to court, Brennan is caught off guard by Angela's facial reconstruction of a woman recently pulled from the Jeffersonian's Limbo storage; a woman that happens to be Bones' mother Christine, who had been missing since Brennan was a teenager. The investigation into the Brennan parents' disappearance is reopened, forcing Bones to reunite with her estranged brother and discover parts of her past that her father tried to keep hidden.

Tropes

  • Foreshadowing: Brennan tells Angela that she misses the part of her relationship with her brother where she felt like someone cared where she was, all the time. At this moment we hear Booth calling her name because he's looking for her.
  • Request for Privacy: Booth discovers that the Jane Doe case they're working on is Brennan's Missing Mom and goes to the Jeffersonian lab to tell her.
    Booth: I need the room, guys.
    Zack: The whole lab? For what?
    Hodgins: It's a cop way of saying "get lost."
  • The Reveal: Brennan has been living under an assumed name for most of her life without even realizing it. She was born Joy Keenan, but her parents created new identities for the whole family when they decided to ran from their previous life.
  • Season Finale: The show's first. Brennan finds her mother's remains and receives a message from her long-missing dad.
  • Wham Episode: This episode puts Brennan through the wringer.
  • Wham Line:
    • Booth delivers one after he sees Angela's facial reconstruction of a Jane Doe that got a very emotional reaction out of Brennan.
      Booth: That… is Christine Brennan.
      Dr. Goodman: …Good God…
      Booth: You just found Bones' mother.
    • The episode ends on another.
      Brennan's Father: [via answering machine] Temperance, you have to stop. You have to stop looking for me.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious: For the first time in the series, Booth calls her "Temperance" instead of "Bones".
