Tropes seen in this episode:

  • Hellhole Prison: Michael Landon – by now the de facto in-charge guy – wasn't afraid to address contemporary problems in Bonanza, and the plight of the imprisoned was just one example. Here, the issue of living conditions inside a penitentiary (which are squalid to say the least, with rodents, rotting produce, damp conditions and other dangers present, not to mention mistreatment by the guards, warden and other staffers) are addressed.
  • Just Got Out of Jail: At the very end of the episode for Griff King, one of the inmates who had staged the protest of living conditions at the Nevada State Penitentiary. He shows promise of rehabilitation and is allowed to be paroled into the Cartwrights' custody.
  • Almost Last Episode New Character: The series' last regular character, Griff King — a parolee who was serving time for robbery — is introduced. At this point, only around 10 episodes remained in the fast fading Bonanza's life.
  • Prison Episode: Although it focuses largely on Ben (and Candy) advocating for the rights of prisoners.
  • Prison Riot: What it takes for Griff and the other inmates to get the attention of the governor to force systematic changes to the state prison system.
  • Wardens Are Evil: Denver Pyle (aka Uncle Jesse) is adamant that the inmates deserve what they're getting.
