Recap / Blue's Clues S1 E1 "Snack Time"

Go To

Original air date: 9/8/1996

In the first Blue's Clues adventure, something is missing from Blue's snack and the viewers play Blue's Clues to figure it out. They also take time to recognize colors as we paint elephants, we identify the shapes of fruit, and they help match chicks on a farm.

"Snack Time" contains examples of:

  • Amusing Injuries: Steve falls backwards when he hears the phone ring. Downplayed, as it's not a serious injury.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Tickety Tock appears in this episode briefly in the bedroom, but she does not talk. Her first speaking appearance will be in the next episode, "What Time Is It For Blue?"
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Since it's the first episode, there are quite a few examples.
    • Mailbox doesn't seem to be a fully developed character yet, as he doesn't have a conversation with Steve about the topic of the episode during mail time, and instead just says he's delivering the mail. This also applies to the next episode "What Time Is It For Blue?," but Mailbox is a fully-fledged character starting with the third episode of the series, "Mailbox's Birthday."
    • When Steve opens the letter during the mail time, he mentions the names of the kids in the video. In most future episodes, he just says "it's a letter from our friends" without saying their names.
    • Blue is depicted with her tongue sticking out for a majority of the episode. This is the only episode where she does this, not including merchandise.
    • Steve sings or whistles when he flips through the pages of the notebook before drawing clues, which almost never happens in future episodes.
    • After drawing the last clue, Steve tells the viewer it's time to sit in the Thinking Chair. In later episodes, Steve would say "We're ready for our...", and the viewers would say "Thinking Chair!"
  • Easily Forgiven: Blue, after knocking over the bag of groceries and a cup of straws.
  • Failed a Spot Check: In addition to it being established that Steve needs the viewers' help to find the clues, when he was asking the chicks for help in finding Blue, they inform him she's sitting on his head.
  • Pilot: This episode is an updated version of the unaired original pilot of "Blue Prints" (the unused name of the show), which followed the same plot as this episode.
