Recap / Black Lightning 2018 S 2 E 4 Translucent Freak

Go To

Jefferson is finally fed up with Anissa's reckless behavior, leading to a bitter argument between daughter and father.

  • Cheated Death, Died Anyway: Even if Fowdy somehow survived the initial fall from Tobias' office, her blood loss and internal injuries leading to sepsis mean it's only a matter of time before she dies; the best Gambi can do is make her comfortable until the end.
  • He's Back!: A villainous example - with Tobias exonerated, he gathers up the 100 at the end of the episode and proclaims his return from hiding in the shadows.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Fowdy claims she worked with ASA to serve her country.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Tobias had all the evidence against him destroyed before he let Henderson arrest him just to screw with him and prove himself to be a wronged man.
  • Internal Reveal: Gambi tells Jefferson about Anissa's reckless Robin Hood hobby.
    • Turns out that Jefferson never told anybody that he saw Tobias murder his dad, on Gambi's advice. Henderson is the first person he told.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Lynn points out that Anissa is not unlike how Black Lightning was when he was first starting out.
  • Nightmare Sequence: The episode opens with Jennifer having a nightmare about Khalil killing her family for her going to a school dance with another dude and using her powers to kill him; turns out it's just a training session to control her powers.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Anissa's Just Like Robin Hood act finally comes back to haunt her as the gangsters she stole from aren't just willing to let it go: they threaten to bomb the same community building she wants to save.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Fowdy pulls this on Gambi telling him he's no better than she is. Gambi fully admits this is true, but with one key difference - he's had time and the desire to atone, while she hasn't.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Henderson calls Whale a "translucent freak".
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: Lowry's new zero tolerance policy leads him to expel a kid for fighting.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Turns out the reason Tobias let himself be caught was so that he could become this. Having had all the evidence against him destroyed, he knew Freeland police would be forced to let him go, thus rehabilitating his reputation and allowing him to re-enter public life.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Lowry's policies are clearly terrible, but also coming from the mistaken belief that it was Jefferson's softness that caused problems.
Lowry: No student will be kidnapped, or shot, or addicted to Green Light on my watch!
