Recap / Big Finish Doctor Who The Dimension Cannon S 1 E 3 Ghost Machines

Go To

With Clive acting as Control, Pete joins his quasi-daughter Rose on a trip into a parallel universe. This universe's Sir Peter Tyler, recently missing-presumed-deceased, invented a technology to power computers with the minds of the deceased. He just didn't realise that, for the people involved, it would hurt so much.

Ghost Machines contains examples of:

  • Automated Automobile: Thanks to SoulTech, this leans almost into sentient vehicles.
  • Acting for Two: In addition to the usual Big Finish tradition of walk-ons being played by the cast, Shaun Dingwall plays two versions of Pete, as well as the computerised version of Sir Peter.
  • Brain Uploading: Effectively what SoulTech does, as well as using the person's mental energy to power the machines. It seems to be this universe's equivalent of Organ Donation, with the family paid for the use of the deceased's soul. Of course, it goes wrong.
  • Call-Back:
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Wallace Richards, Sir Peter's Operations Director, has him killed by his own self-driving car, has an affair with Jackie, and is willing to brush several deaths under the carpet to become top down of SoulTech.
  • Downer Ending: As Rose and Pete leave, it looks like the world is going to settle down into a balance between the humans and the sould machines... until fighting erupts for dominance, Soul Machine Pete is seemingly killed, and the world descends into chaos.
  • Robo Sexual: Alternate Jackie seems perfectly satisfied with a Pete's soul in a robot body.
