Station Under Investigation: Oakwood

Tony accuses Sergeant Markham of corruption.

Provides examples of:

  • A Father to His Men: Chief Inspector Stubbs defends his officers against Tony's investigation, insisting that they're "good boys". When Tony comes to interview him informally at his home, he mentions that a couple of his officers have called him up in tears over the situation. This is then abruptly subverted when it's revealed that he's the one trying to Frame-Up Markham to save his own skin.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Markham comes to see Harry on his day off to plead his innocence because the investigation
  • Blackmail: The investigation against Markham got started off because he allegedly was going to fit up George Tolley for several offences unless he paid Markham off.
  • Cool Shades: Downplayed. Tony wears some surprisingly stylish Ray-Bans as part of his casual outfit for the observation in Hyde Park.
  • Foreshadowing: Harry warns Tony that there will be "bodies on the floor" by the time the Carswell case wraps up. Jenny later commits suicide after being leaned on to say that Carswell confessed in the panda car.
  • The Informant: Stubbs tries to sell his involvement with Tolley as this to Tony:
    "A good grass is worth a thousand computers."
  • Invisible President: Huxtable and Dunning's replacement, DAC Flint have to deal with the Home Secretary putting pressure on the Met to clean up the Carswell case. At the time, the position would have been held by Kenneth Clarke, but rather than naming him specifically, Huxtable and Flint are called into a meeting with a senior civil servant who grills them on the minister's behalf.
  • Orphaned Punchline: We catch the tale end of Jerry telling a joke to Graves' team in the pub.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: The episode ends with Jenny pleading with Tony not to abandon her after she's been served with a 163 as part of the Carswell investigation.
  • Rescue Romance: Hargreaves tries to play into this with Jenny as the Carswell investigation starts to focus on her, but it's unclear how much of it is a ploy to make sure she doesn't crack under the pressure and implicate anyone else in the process.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Panter's reaction when Tony and the others reveal they've been watching him and Markham is to leg it.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Stubbs describes Markham as being "a bit Cecil Gee". Cecil Gee was a fashion designer in The '60s.
    • At one point someone mentions that Saddam Hussein is getting better press coverage than CIB.
  • Titled After the Song: The episode title comes from the song by Elvis Costello.
