Tropes

  • Black Comedy Burst: A Tetramand guard shuts up a complaining prisoner by pointing out another prisoner who stopped complaining the day before. Said second prisoner is a dried out skeleton.
  • Defeated and Trophified: OTTO's final fate, being impaled on a pole and given to Gar to wave around.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Kevin and Rook accept a car made of Taydenite as payment for Ben saving Gar's car collection, intending to sell it to pay off the damages to their vehicles. Ben then asks them who they can find who is rich enough to buy a car made of Taydenite.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Prisoners on Khoros are buried up to their necks outside the city walls, and left to die in the desert heat. One prisoner is there for turnstile jumping.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Played with. OTTO started out as an AI for a faulty air conditioner, then betrayed Kevin and Argit to escape the Null Void, then became a gang leader, and finally a Humongous Mecha made of very expensive material. He gets Kevin, Argit, and Rook running away, but Ben deals with him in five minutes.
  • Humongous Mecha: OTTO turns the expensive cars, and Rook's truck, into a three-story tall mech that could stomp his enemies flat. Ben returns the favor as Upgrade with Kevin's car.
  • Running Gag: Kevin's car is totaled again, first by Eatle munching on his bumper, and then by Upgrade taking a beating from OTTO. Ends up being a case of Running Gagged, as later episodes show that his car was destroyed for good here and replaced with a new one.
  • Synchronous Episodes: This episode happens at the same time as most of "Mud is Thicker Than Water", with Kevin and Rook calling for Ben as their situation rapidly deteriorates. Ben arrives at the climax to take down OTTO.
  • Underestimating Badassery: OTTO is clearly familiar with Galvanic Mechamorphs, yet he thinks an alien that can meld with technology, which he is made of, is no threat to him. Upgrade proceeds to assimilate his Transformer-esque body and flick his head off.

Sand Rippers

Sometimes, alien planets can have shark-like fauna that swim through sand as fast as a car can drive.
