Recap / Batman Wayne Family Adventures Episode 99 Kidnapping Clinic

Go To

Duke has learned the hard way that being a ward of Bruce Wayne suddenly makes him a target for kidnappers. Bruce and Detective Montoya both assure Duke that they'll handle it. Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian, however, have different advice...

Tropes:

  • Attack on One Is an Attack on All: Damian lampshades that the Bat-Family takes an attack on any member seriously, though he initially claims it's because their family honor suffers when one of them is held prisoner.
  • Big Brother Instinct: All of Duke's foster brothers go out of their way to reassure him that they'll keep him safe from anyone who tries to come for him.
  • Big Word Shout: As Duke is freaking out about whether to put himself or his secret identity in danger in the event that the kidnappers get past Bruce's defenses, Damian smugly comments that if Jason is the one in charge of rescuing him, he's going to be in danger anyway. Jason indignantly yells, "HEY!"
  • The Cameo: Renee Montoya makes her first appearance since "Hold The Line". She doesn't talk, though.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: None of the Bat kids (minus Duke, of course) are too fazed about a kidnapping threat. They only take it seriously because it's the first one directed at Duke.
  • Continuity Nod: Jason brings up how he's had to save Tim from being kidnapped twice. Tim is not amused.
  • I Have Your Wife: It's addressed here that, due to Bruce Wayne's reputation as one of the richest men in the world, his kids are often targets of kidnapping threats or attempts. Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian aren't too upset by it (Tim's more upset over the fact that Jason's the one who saves him every time and won't let him live it down). Duke, however, is clearly nervous.
  • I Will Find You: When the other boys are giving Duke advice about how to handle things, Damian says that if worst comes to worst, he doesn't need to worry because they'll save him.
  • Match Cut: When Dick is talking about his own experience getting kidnapped, he flashes back to a shot of him as a kid in bat pajamas while sucking his thumb and cuddling an elephant plushie getting a net thrown over him. Then he mentions that it hasn't entirely stopped, and there's a shot of him in the same position and hugging the same stuffed animal as an adult.
  • Mythology Gag: The elephant plushie Dick sleeps with is a reference to Zitka, an elephant he looked after and was very close to when he was part of the circus as a child.
  • Noodle Incident: Dick casually mentions that, after Bruce took him in, people would try to kidnap him all of the time. He even remarks that it didn't stop when he was an adult (although it did happen less frequently).
  • Papa Wolf: While Bruce is quick to reassure Duke that nothing bad is going to happen to him, it's clear to everyone that the people who sent the threat are going to get a visit from a certain Dark Knight...
  • Pass the Popcorn: While watching Jason remind Tim of how he saved him (and Tim's resultant reaction), Damian and Duke are seen snacking on popcorn.
  • Sadistic Choice: When the question of what Duke should do if he gets captured comes up, Jason and Tim disagree about whether it's better to fight (and potentially raise some eyebrows) or be a pretend prisoner (and possibly get hurt). Duke sums both unappealing sides up. Then Dick offers the advice to trust his instincts and keep himself safe above all else; they can deal with the fallout of a potential secret identity risk if necessary.
  • Still Sucks Thumb: It's not a big feature of the comic, but Dick's reminisces about the times he's been kidnapped, both as a kid and as an adult, reveal that he still sleeps with his thumb in his mouth.
  • Tranquil Fury: While he does his best to reassure Duke, it's clear that Bruce is not amused with one of his kids being threatened.
