Tropes present in this episode:

  • Big Brother Is Watching: During Zeke's reunion with the Warrior Unit, the room they're in is being monitored by the Public Security Bureau.
  • Blatant Lies: Reiner's words about the friends he made in Paradis. Considering the shocked looks on his families faces when he mentions that he met "lots of different people" they probably wouldn't appreciate finding out that those on Paradis aren't just mindless devils.
  • Cerebus Call-Back: Reiner recalls humorous moments about his time in Paradis Island in a family dinner in such a way that he makes it seem like every person he met there was a horrible person.
  • Driven to Suicide: A traumatized Eldian soldier takes his own life in the night after coming home. Combined with Partly Cloudy with a Chance of Death.
  • Foreshadowing: to the Jaw Titan's final form
General: We don't have any titans with wings, do we?
  • Kick the Dog: A Marleyan soldier makes a loud noise to scare the PTSD-suffering Eldians for fun.
  • Secret Test of Character: On the train ride back to the Liberio Interment Zone Falco expresses his doubts about the "honor" of inheriting on of the Nine Titans and the fact that, if Gabi succeeds, she will be dead in thirteen years. Reiner then confronts him, tells him that talk like that could be construed as treason, and threatens to report him to the higher-ups. After Falco then firmly states that he would be honored to inherit the Armored Titan Reiner breaks his facade and begs him to do so for Gabi's sake.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Many of them in the Eldian Unit.
  • Stranger in a Familiar Land: Reiner. Ironically, he spent his five years on Paradis fighting to return home. However, his experiences there has changed him too much, making it impossible for him to embrace the propaganda that his family believes in. When the Braun family gathers for a celebratory dinner, he's clearly the odd man out and struggles to hide his true feelings about Gabi becoming a Warrior and the "demons" of the island. His mother, who he did everything to please, repeatedly gives him angry and horrified looks.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Discussed, as Zeke and Colt talk about the former's plan to take Paradis Island. Colt asks Zeke if he thinks he can take the island in one year, to what Zeke answers that he only has a year to try anyway.
