Tropes:

  • 13 Is Unlucky: Anyone who inherits one of the Nine Titans also inherits the "Curse of Ymir" which gives them a limited lifespan of thirteen years, the exact amount of time Ymir Fritz had her Titan powers before she died. If another Eldian doesn't consume one of the Nine then the power is randomly distributed to an unborn Eldian after the holder dies.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Kruger mentioning Mikasa and Armin to Grisha years before they're born. This raises quite a few questions, such as whether he's referring to our Mikasa and Armin, whether Kruger's somehow predicting the future, and whether Eren's recollection of Grisha's memories are of questionable accuracy.
  • Chuunibyou: When Eren blurts out dramatically that he has the Attack Titan from his memories, Hange and Levi overhear it and dismiss it as Eren going through a phase as a fifteen year old. Zackaly agrees.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Eren has one during the meeting with the military higherups when Hange reiterates what they now know about the history of the Titans. After Hange points out that Eren was briefly able to access the power of the Founding Titan despite not having royal blood Eren, with the new knowledge gained from his fathers memories, realises it was because he touched Dina's Titan.
  • The Reveal: Another story-heavy episode.
    • Iterating on a point brought up last episode, there are 9 discrete Titan powers than any Eldian can possess, letting them regenerate their human bodies and turn into that Titan at will. The Titan possessed by Kruger, inherited by Grisha, then inherited by Eren, is known as the Attack Titan.
    • Everyone who possesses a Titan power is subject to the "Curse of Ymir", meaning that the strain of Titan shifting will wear their human bodies down, inevitably killing them within 13 years' time. This means that Armin has 13 years left to live, while Eren only has 8.
    • Every single Eldian is connected by unseen "paths" that allow them to view each others memories in certain circumstances and control their actions. The Founding Titan is the unseen Coordinate that links the paths to every past, present, and future Eldian and allows them to completely control their people if they so choice. This is the reason for how King Fritz was able to strip his peoples memories of the life outside the walls and also how Kruger was able to see Eren's memories and know about Mikasa and Armin.
    • Eren realises that the reason he was able to use the Founding Titans power briefly when only a member of the royal family is suppose to be able to do that is because he touched Dina's Titan and theorises that he may be able to do it again if another member of royal blood became a Titan.
  • Title Drop: In an odd way. Eren's Titan is revealed to be the "Shingeki no Kyojin", or Attack Titan. The former is the Japanese name of the series (literally meaning "Advancing Giants"), but was translated as "Attack on Titan" for the English title.
  • Wham Line: This exchange comes out of nowhere and has many potential implications for the plot. Keep in mind that Mikasa and Armin hadn't even been born yet:
Kruger: To save Mikasa, Armin and everyone else, you must see it through.
Grisha: Mikasa? Armin? Who are they?
Kruger: [pause] Who knows? I'm not sure... whose memories are those?
  • Your Days Are Numbered: It's revealed by Kruger, and subsequently Eren, that everyone who inherits one of the Nine Titans will only have thirteen years left to live since Ymir Fritz, the progenitor of the Eldian people, only lived that long before passing her powers on.
