Now that the battle to reclaim Trost District has been won humanity has learned that a Titan was the deciding factor that saved their lives. While some are ecstatic others, especially those in the Military Police, are not. Before Eren can return to his house in Shiganshina he must first stand trial wherein not only will his future as a potential Survey Corpsmen be decided but also his very life.
Tropes:
- Armor-Piercing Question: When some of the MPs insist on killing Eren, Levi asks them that, if Eren did turn into a Titan, would they even be able to stop him at that point. This ends up being the basis of Erwin's proposal to Commander in Chief Zackly that Levi would have no problem disposing of Eren should the need arise.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: After Eren's outburst during the trial Levi delivers an incredibly brutal beat down on a restrained Eren. It's so brutal that even the Military Police that were about to kill Eren are left disturbed. This is actually part of a Batman Gambit by Erwin to show off Levi's strength and get support for their planed expedition.
- Not Helping Your Case: After listening to various people at his trial lambasting him Eren accuses them of being selfish cowards that are holding humanity back and that, if they are too scared to fight the Titans, they should leave it to him. Unfortunately for Eren his words only result in frightening the people at his trail more and he almost gets his head blown off by one of the MPs.
- Take a Third Option: Eren's trial is presented with two options at the start. Either he is reinstated into the military as a member of the Survey Corps, so that his Titan powers can be used to plug up the hole in Wall Maria, or the Military Police are allowed custody of him at which point they will dissect him to gain all necessary knowledge they can before killing him. Instead Erwin proposes that Eren should be placed into Levi's custody, who can easily kill Eren should the need arise, and an expedition beyond Wall Rose can take place as a trial run to the eventual recapture of Wall Maria. Zackly ends up agreeing with the third option.
