Recap / Arthur S 5 E 4 The World Record The Cave

Go To

The World Record

The gang attempts to get a place in the book of world records.

  • Guinness Episode: The plot is about Arthur and his friends trying to break various world records. In the end, they team up to make the world's largest pizza.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: In the end, D.W. wonders to Arthur the record for longest case of hiccups, to which Arthur answers that one case lasted years. On behalf of Nadine (who has hiccups), D.W. worries her imaginary friend will not like the news.

The Cave

Arthur deals with several phobias as a field trip into a cave approaches.

  • Chekhov's Skill: David Read tells Arthur a story on how he used to whistle to calm his nerves when he went down to his childhood home's cellar. Arthur uses that to calm everybody down as they exit the cave.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Both Francine and D.W. tease Arthur for calling caves "creepy" by trying to scare him when the latter said it offhandedly. To Arthur's credit, he does not let their teasing bother him that much outside of mild annoyance.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Francine spends the entire episode teasing Arthur for being afraid of the dark, only to scream when confronted with bats. As an added bonus, Binky took a photo of the incident for everyone to see. Everyone tells her that she was so scared, even though she claims she wasn't that scared, and ends up chasing after Binky (who keeps taking pictures of her during the chase), yelling that he's going to be sorry for taking those pictures.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Francine and D.W. both mock Arthur for being scared of a trip to a cave. While we see that Francine is actually scared and Arthur helps her out, we never see how D.W. reacts to hearing that Arthur wasn't scared. We also don't know if Arthur told David that he used his advice to get his class to safety.
