Recap / Arthur S 16 E 2 Flippity Francine Muffy Takes The Wheel

Go To

Francine has an accident during soccer training and is filmed by Muffy, and she quickly becomes the newest Internet sensation.

Tropes from "Flippity Francine" include:

  • Continuity Nod: When Francine talks to Buster about how she wishes she wasn't popular for her accidents anymore, Buster brings up the time he became famous for saving a cat in "Buster Baxter, Cat Saver" and how he actually hated it. He also brings up the end of the episode, where he saved his friends from a runaway piano.
  • Dreaded Kids' Party Entertainer Job: In Francine's nightmare, after losing her Internet fame, she's forced to entertain small children by doing flips for them while dressed as a clown.
  • Follow the Leader: In-universe. Francine's videos spawns copycats such as "Flippity Frank".
  • Goofy Suit: Muffy's dad wears a full-body duck suit for a Crosswire Motors commercial. The slogan is "Our prices are so low, we must be quackers!"
  • Instant Humiliation Just Add Youtube: Played with. Francine is initially embarrassed when Muffy films her accidental flip during soccer training and puts it online, but she starts to embrace it when she sees how funny everyone finds it. Eventually, though, she dislikes how she's become primarily known as "Flippity Francine", and she just wants things to go back to normal.
  • Shout-Out: The nightmare Francine has when Muffy uses surgery to turn her into a clown parodies the opening of The Six Million Dollar Man.
Muffy: Gentlemen, we can remake her! Sillier! Goofier! Totally ridiculous!

Muffy has to build a car for the Lakewood Elementary derby, but worries that her father, Ed, is going to take over the project.

Tropes from "Muffy Takes the Wheel" include:

  • Literal Metaphor: When Ed shows Muffy a Cool Car that she should model hers on, he says that "it's got 'Derby Winner' written all over it!" Then he closes the door to reveal that exact text written on the car.
  • The Parent-Produced Project: Deconstructed. The episode's conflict revolves around Muffy wanting to build a car on her own, but she feels like Ed is taking it over. He's genuinely helping and doesn't come off as too pushy, and he had entered a similar contest as a kid. However, Muffy feels guilty about taking what's basically his work and passing it off as her own. In the end, she makes her own car at the last minute rather than using her father's.
  • Second Place Is for Winners: Muffy narrowly loses to George's car, but she and her father aren't discouraged. Instead, they go for a drive in a real Cool Car.
