Recap / Archies Weird Mysteries Compu Terror

Go To

A recent investigation of Archie's leaves him unable to type, so Reggie offers to do the Weird Mysteries column for him — but purposely makes up a lot of nonsense. Unfortunately, the computer Reggie uses houses an evil genie, and once it has granted three wishes, it will gain freedom and can wreak havoc on Riverdale.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: Archie pretends to think the genie is just bluffing and doesn't have real power any more than Reggie does. It agrees to get all the ketchup out of the bottle as a test and promises it will then kill Archie for being impertinent. It gets trapped in the bottle instead.
  • Flaw Exploitation: If the genie had thought at all, it would have realized it had no reason to respond to Archie's dare. However, his bruising its ego by pretending to doubt it gets it to cooperate.
  • Genie in a Bottle: An genie is trapped in an urn, kept by Dr. Beaumont, and may only be released if he can grant three wishes. Unfortunately, a crack a customer made in the urn allowed him to transfer over from it to the nearby loaner laptop Archie carried in with him, allowing him to covertly grant Reggie's wishes to gain his freedom. In the end, Archie tricks the genie into a ketchup bottle, which is given to Dr. Beaumont for further safekeeping.
  • Impossible Pickle Jar: A variation; Archie dares the evil genie to prove its power by emptying a ketchup bottle. It's part of his plan to reseal the genie before it can cause any more havoc.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Reggie releases an evil genie by writing with a computer that it had inhabited.
  • Rewriting Reality: Reggie inadvertently wishes that whatever he types into his laptop to come true. To his surprise, if he mentions himself even he will be pushed into doing what he writes.
  • Smooch of Victory: Reggie writes himself as getting one from Betty and Veronica on the computer. Both girls can't figure out why they'd want to, but instantly they find themselves kissing Reggie.
  • Stealing the Credit: The opening indicates Reggie has a bad habit of telling others' stories as if they were his own. When he is freed from the laptop, the genie calls him out for taking credit for his magic.
  • To Serve Man: The Genie attempts to eat both Principal Weatherbee and Jughead by barbecuing them.
  • Trauma Button Ending: According to Archie's ending write-up, Jughead was so scared by almost being cooked alive by the genie that he couldn't eat hamburgers for a whole day.
  • Tricking the Shapeshifter: Archie is able to trap the evil genie by challenging him to get all of the ketchup out of a glass bottle. The genie shrinks down to get inside the bottle to push out all the ketchup just in time for Archie to put the cap on the bottle.
