Recap / Archer S 5 E 10 Archer Vice Palace Intrigue Part I

Go To

The ISIS Cartel go to the Central American country of San Marcos, ruled by Gustavo Calderon, to sell the newly acquired weaponry previously received from Slater.

This episode provides examples of:

  • The Caligula: Calderon is arrogant, domineering, abusive and shamelessly exploits the impoverished people of San Marcos to fund his many expensive hobbies and interests. His position as "president" is also hereditary, having been held by his family for generations.
  • Fan Boy: Gustavo Calderon has an eclectic range of interests, all of which cost insane sums of money. This includes wines belonging to historical figures, often incomprehensible artworks, a massive car collection and Cherlene. He also claims a great deal of knowledge of U.S. history to justify his actions, but many of his comparisons are dubious at best.
  • Fictional Painting: Calderon describes a colorful painting that is hidden under a thick layer of pure white. To the shock of Sterling and Malory, the previously assumed blank portrait costs $40 million.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Archer has sex with the manor's maid, only to learn later that she's actually Calderon's wife in disguise. He panics and later makes the mistake in talking to Lana about it. Naturally, this infuriates her after his promise to abstain from "anonymous sex". He then tries to justify his definition of that, and ends up with a punch to his balls as a result.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Malory is completely lost when the rest of the crew start comparing themselves to the Breakfast Club.
Malory: Are you all just saying random words?
  • Spit Take: Narrowly averted. Archer discovers he's slept with Calderon's wife at the exact moment he's taken a drink of some very purple wine, right next to Calderon's pure-white $40 million painting. After several seconds of struggling to prevent the inevitable disaster, he manages to swallow the wine.
  • Wham Shot: Krieger comes face to face with a trio of his clones.
    • The gang finds themselves under fire of the San Marcos rebellion.
