This episode has examples of:

  • Accidental Celebrity: Anne and Sprig ruined Grubhog Day... but they gave Wartwood a form of entertainment that they enjoyed much more than the Grubhog Day celebration!
  • Bring My Brown Pants: After she's calmed down from almost getting her arm chopped off, Anne admits that the experience nearly caused her to wet herself in fright.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Anne's reaction to the grubhog before learning it can spit acid.
Anne: He's so cute, like a little sock puppet!
  • Dissonant Serenity:
Hop Pop: Great news! Ralphie Underbrook has the plague!
  • Fictional Holiday: Grubhog Day is the Amphibia version of Groundhog Day, as Anne points out. Only instead of seeing its shadow, the Grubhog predicts the weather after it's cut open and its guts are examined.
  • Hand Puppet: Anne creates one as a replacement for the Grubhog.
  • Hidden Depths: Anne apparently has some skills in puppetry, having made a grubhog puppet in under 5 minutes and put on a slapstick routine with it.
  • Kidnapping Bird of Prey: Just as Sprig is about to pick up the Grubhog after falling off the rollercoaster, a giant vulture-like bird grabs it and flies away. At the end of the episode, it's revealed that the Grubhog is some sort of king and the bird is one of his loyal subjects saving him.
  • Loophole Abuse: Anne points out that the Grubhog's caretaker only has to "keep an eye on the Grubhog" and convinces Sprig to simply take the Grubhog along as they go on all the rides.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: The Grubhog is Exactly What It Says on the Tin: part larva (grub), part pig (hog).
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Twofold: Sprig loses the Grubhog, and it turns out the Grubhog is a king that is now going to declare war on an unknown people. It's implied that it's the frogs as revenge for nearly being killed.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: While carrying out the Grubhog, Anne and Sprig make sure he's part of the fun as well. That leads to him being rescued by his bird subject, and preparing war.
  • Papa Wolf: Hop Pop jumps to Sprig's defense after Mayor Toadstool calls him goofy.
  • Person as Verb: Ever since a Plantar ate the Grubhog while guarding it, those chosen to take care of it are told not to "Pull a Plantar".
  • Russian Reversal: While rehearsing for the puppet show, they say these lines:
    Villagers(Sprig): Chop the grubhog!
    Grubhog(Anne): No, chop you!
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Anne as usual, though in this case she sees how miserable Sprig is about missing a day at the fair. She tries to encourage him to fulfill his duties and have fun at the same time.
  • Wait, What?: Anne has this reaction when she learns that the Grubhog is disemboweled and its guts are read. Given that the current grubhog is a sock puppet she's controlling, that means she's about to have her arm cut open.
  • Whatevermancy: Grubhog day involves a form of divination called haruspicy, that is the disembowelment of an animal and the reading of its entrails to divine the future. In this case, it's about predicting the weather, and apparently spots on the liver means two more weeks of winter.
