Recap / American Housewife S 5 E 3 Coupling

Go To

All three of the Otto kids are facing changes in their relationships with their respective partners-in-crime: after Katie tells Taylor to start acting her age, Trip starts spending nights; Oliver has been working late on the Gifty app with Trevor, leading Cooper to feel lonely and neglected; Anna-Kat and Franklin both get mono, the kissing disease, leading Katie and Greg to logically assume they've started kissing.

Tropes:

  • Berserk Button: We learn both Oliver's and Cooper's trigger words in this episode. Oliver's is being told to "relax", and Cooper's is being called "crazy".
  • Casual Kink: Not the first episode to imply that Katie and Greg enjoy using handcuffs in the bedroom. They give a pair to Taylor and Trip in their "sex basket", and the two of them seem decidedly less interested.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Trip eats all of the edible panties given to him and Taylor in the "sex basket" without actually using any of them.
  • Comic Sutra: Katie describes sexual intercourse as third base, and when a confused Greg clarifies that intercourse is usually a home run, Katie explains that, being from Florida, she uses "home run" to refer to a Florida home run, a sex act which is never described in detailnote  other than that at least one participant has to lean forward at some point. Amusingly Trip also knows what a Florida home run is.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The friction between Oliver and Cooper is very deliberately played as a lover's spat throughout the episode.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: For the second consecutive episode, Taylor refers to Cooper as Oliver's boyfriend, when she complains that he (unlike Trip) is allowed to spend nights.
Oliver: Cooper is not my boyfriend!
Cooper: Well you don't have to say it like that.
  • Hidden Depths: Franklin turns out to be a master at shadow puppets.
  • Impossible Shadow Puppets: A lot of Franklin's shadow puppets, including a bull and matador fighting (then making up, as per Anna-Kat's suggestion), him and Anna-Kat kissing, and even Trip's aunt Edna, whom he hasn't even met.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Oliver and Cooper, who aren't even dating (though they are living together). Katie, in watching them argue, remarks to Greg "promise we'll never be like them".
  • Mistaken for Romance: Anna-Kat and Franklin get mono, which Katie and Greg assume they got from kissing each other. Turns out they haven't been kissing, and Franklin theorizes they got it from sharing a metal straw that Greg is making Anna-Kat use instead of plastic ones.
  • Mrs. Robinson: The thirty-something Doris continues to lech on a much younger man when she compliments Trip's attractiveness, although to her credit she does make sure with Katie that he's over 18 before she does so.
  • Not Under the Parents' Roof: This episode finally, definitively confirms after years of "are-they-or-aren't-they" that Taylor and Trip are sexually active - and that they're doing it in her bedroom, which rankles Katie something fierce (Greg isn't too thrilled about it either). Doris, of all people, convinces Katie that she should accept it lest someday Taylor refuses to come back home for Thanksgiving - and they are, after all, consenting adults in a loving, monogamous relationship. Ironically, after Katie and Greg demonstrate to Taylor and Trip that they are accepting (complete with the "sex basket"), the two agree that perhaps they should find other places to be intimate.
  • Sick Episode: No, not COVID. Anna-Kat and Franklin are both struck down with mono.
