Recap / American Housewife S 4 E 9 Hip To Be Square

Go To

Katie is alarmed when Doris reveals that the main reason she and Richard are divorcing is that they grew apart because they have nothing in common, because she and Greg have nothing in common either, so the two get to work trying to find common interests. This inspires her to encourage Anna-Kat to go along with Franklin's interest in square dancing even though she would rather play dodgeball. Meanwhile, Cooper is ready to say "I love you" to his new girlfriend but Oliver tries to dissuade him, because he isn't ready to say it to his girlfriend Brie, and the two couples have been in lockstep up to this point. Finally, Trip keeps sabotaging Taylor's singing audition for Carnegie Mellon.

The last appearance of Oliver's third love interest, Brie.

Tropes:

  • Girl of the Week: Quite literally, Charlotte only appears in this episode.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: In the end, both Oliver and Cooper are left with their one true love - each other.
Cooper: I guess Charlotte and I just weren't meant to be.
Oliver: Yeah, neither were me and Brie.
Cooper: But we'll always have each other. I love you, bro.
Oliver: I love you too, man.
  • Hidden Depths: Franklin is a gifted square dancer.
  • The "I Love You" Stigma: Cooper wants to say it to Charlotte but Oliver tries to talk him out of it because he isn't ready to say it to Brie. When Cooper does finally say it, Charlotte rejects him and both couples break up.
  • Offscreen Breakup: Brie dumps Oliver offscreen, and she is never seen or (directly) mentioned again.
  • Remember the New Guy?: You remember Charlotte, Cooper's girlfriend, right? According to Oliver they met at the same time as he and Brie did, but if you go back and watch "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems", Brie's friend in the scene where they all meet for the first time is not Charlotte. In fact this is Charlotte's one and only onscreen appearance.
