Recap / American Dad! S6E9 "Rapture's Delight"

Go To

Stan and Francine are left behind as the Rapture takes place on Christmas Eve.

Tropes:

  • Art Shift: The Christian video explaining the Rapture shifts from a low-budget puppet show to featuring horrific artwork depicting Biblical battles that wouldn't be out of place for Warhammer.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: The Antichrist is a shrill voiced incompetent boob who wouldn't be out of place in Batman (1966), but he nearly kills Jesus a few times and does succeed in killing Stan.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Antichrist lies dead, his headquarters is destroyed, and with Armageddon over, the destroyed world can begin to heal. But this came at the cost of Stan sacrificing himself to save Jesus from a sneak attack by the Antichrist, leaving Francine bereaved after she learned that Stan never stopped loving her. Still, Stan's sacrifice secures his place in Heaven, where his personal Heaven is life exactly as it was prior to the Rapture (albeit with Klaus stuffed and mounted).
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: At some point during the seven year war, Stan ends up getting his left hand replaced with a knife blade.
  • Call-Back: Michelle, who was Stan's lawyer during his trial in purgatory, is the angel who checks Steve, Hayley, and Stan into their personal heavens.
  • Caught Up in the Rapture: The Rapture and the Second Coming of Christ take place. Stan and Francine are left behind because they had sex in the church's storage closet.
  • Darker and Edgier: As expected of an episode with a post-apocalyptic United States. The cities have been destroyed and are on fire, the skies are red and demons fly the skies and the moon is split in two.
  • The Devil Is a Loser: The Antichrist is the exact opposite of suave, badass Jesus; a dorky schlub who cracks lame jokes and can't build traps to save his life.
  • Dirty Coward: Stan was perfectly willing to abandon Francine to the oncoming hoards of Hell just to get into Heaven.
  • Earth Is the Center of the Universe: When Jesus meets Roger, he refers to aliens as his dad's "side projects", which Roger takes offense to.
  • Empty Piles of Clothing: All who are raptured leave their clothes behind.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Mortally wounded by the Anti-Christ and the Rapture spell taking too long to work, Stan lights up a cigar as he waits for the bomb to explode.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Stan throws himself in front of a Last Breath Bullet from the Antichrist to save Jesus. This not only allows Jesus to finish the Antichrist off, but ensures Stan's passage to Heaven.
  • Humble Hero: In comparison to the False Jesus announcing themselves in a public event (to bring in more suckers for sexual favours), the real Jesus apparently doesn't make any such announcement, in fact waiting for the oncoming war like an average citizen.
  • Hypocrite: Stan desperately begs "Jesus" to rapture him, exclaiming Francine tempted him into having sex at church and he doesn't deserve to be dragged down with her. Francine very quickly calls Stan out for thinking he's better than her, considering they've both done some terrible things in their lives.
  • Noodle Implements: Just as the Rapture takes place, Roger shows up dressed as Moses and holding two tablets containing joke commandments.
Roger: What's going on? I was about to do something funny.
  • Noodle Incident: Roger makes this observation upon seeing everyone ascending upwards.
Roger: Oh my GOD! The homeless guy from the bus station is hung! But I knew that.
  • Oh, Crap!: Roger's smugness about escaping the Rapture vanishes when he realizes Francine accidentally donated his spaceship parts to Goodwill and he starts strangling her.
Roger: Oh, okay, well as long as there's a good explana... [suddenly jumps at Francine and begins strangling her] Didn't you hear the puppets?! Demons are coming to rape our skulls!
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Steve and Hayley are raptured and end up in Heaven well before Stan and Francine.
  • Real After All: Father Donovan's reaction to seeing millions of people floating up into the sky is to say "Turns out, there is a God."
  • Reset Button: After perishing in the destruction of the Anti-Christ's lair, Stan is checked in to his personal heaven, which is everything as it was before the Rapture happened. With the one change being Klaus ending up stuffed and mounted.
  • Shout-Out: The Anti-Christ's lair is the remnants of the UN headquarters in New York. In the Left Behind series, the Anti-Christ takes over the UN.
  • Taking the Bullet: Stan takes a fatal shot for Jesus. He has enough time to light a cigar and enjoy his last moments before the bomb goes off.
  • Walk on Water: The real Jesus does this when he reveals himself to Stan.
(guitar riff) He turned water into FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE!!!
