Recap / American Dad S 5 E 17 Every Which Way But Lose

Go To

Stan cuts Steve from a football team because he isn't athletic, leading to Steve forming a rival team to beat him. Meanwhile, Francine tries to make a pie good enough to win the county fair, only to learn that Hayley is the woman who wins every year.

Tropes:

  • Disappointed by the Motive: Steve bluntly makes it known that Stan trying to kill himself just because he lost a football game is "an overreaction."
  • Hypocrite: Hayley denounces pie-baking contests as a holdover of outdated patriarchal ideals, only to be revealed that she's been secretly entering pies and winning the contest for years.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After all the times Stan punched Steve in the groin, Steve finally gets a shot at payback at the end of the episode.
Stan: Hey look at this, we're having a father-and-son moment.
Steve: Quit ruining it! (Punches Stan in the balls)
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Saying that baking contests are leftover from patriarchal values of the 1950s, Hayley sarcastically says women should just give up their right to vote, only for Francine to admit she doesn't vote.
Francine: It's just so confusing. I go into the booth, pull the curtain, and count to ten. Then I come out, yell "Democracy!", and run to my car.
  • Serious Business: Stan takes winning so seriously that he tries to kill himself when he loses.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Similar Squad: Steve's team includes Snot, Barry, and Toshi, and his "equally important friends" Cheese, Hubert, and Li-Fung. Li-Fung begins saying something in Chinese, and Toshi fights him for stealing his bit.
  • Sore Loser: Stan is revealed to be such a bad one that he tries hanging himself out of shame.
  • Talking Down the Suicidal: The final act has Steve trying to make Stan it's okay to cry and not resort to suicide just because something doesn't go his way for once.
