Tropes

  • Actually Pretty Funny: After seeing the surrealist play about Lincoln, Steve declares that "Lincoln has been assassinated in the theater twice." Stan is impressed by this.
  • Foot Focus: Stan stares at the feet of two men wearing sandals. Which is one of the signs to help identify someone as gay he told Steve at the beginning of the episode.
  • Homoerotic Subtext: Stan's play is about the relationship between Abraham Lincoln and his bodyguard David Derickson, which is so packed with homoerotic undertones that it becomes increasingly popular as more gay men come to see it.
Stan: You got gay from Lincoln? You guys are really grasping at straws here.
  • Internal Reveal: Stan finally learns that Greg and Terry are gay.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Averted. Stan thought the Gay Republican Party invited him thinking he was gay (and his play being unintentionally homoerotic seem to add to it). They know he isn't gay, but invited him because they love his play.
  • Oh, Crap!: Stan, when he realize he's in the Gay Republican Party.
  • True Art Is Incomprehensible: The Smiths go to a play called Abraham L., which consists of a man in his underwear and a stovepipe hat throwing raw steaks on the stage, quoting advertising slogans, and asking "Aren't we all just slaves?" before a mirror descends to reflect the audience. Hayley is the only Smith who liked and possibly gets it, while Stan hated it which led him to do his own play about the real Lincoln.
