Recap / American Dad! S3E1 "Camp Refoogie"

Go To

Stan tries to get Steve into a summer camp and ends up sending him to an African refugee camp. Meanwhile, Roger and Francine create their own personas as a married couple.

Tropes:

  • AcCENT upon the Wrong SylLABle: Stan sees a sign identifying the place as a refugee camp. To make it more like a summer camp, he calls it "Camp Refoogie."
  • Ambiguous Situation: Did Roger and Francine end up Becoming the Mask or merely got worked up that the other was framing the other with their stories.
  • Balloon Belly: Hayley gains a pot belly from eating too much at the UN camp, which she calls "the African 20".
  • Comically Missing the Point: Stan becomes entirely wrapped up in the idea of making the refugee camp a summer camp, from asking the refugees who have nothing for payments to considering the neighboring insurgent camp to be a rival. At the end of the episode, Stan asks one of the refugees to stay in touch, and he replies that they're being sent to another camp and have nothing to communicate with.
  • Death of a Child: As Roger and Francine's persona marriage breaks down, Roger establishes their child drowned due to Francine's negligence.
  • Hypocrite: Hayley lashes out at the UN workers for enjoying a sumptuous feast while there are starving refugees outside. However, when she finds out that Stan has decided that they'll be spending a few weeks here, she immediately gives in, even eating meat despite being a vegetarian.
  • Mama Bear: Francine makes a definitive statement that Stan is not coming back from the refugee camp without Steve if he knows what's good for him.
  • Shout-Out: The opening has Stan chasing Steve through a storm drain like in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. He also carries camp brochures in a box of roses and Francine even says "Come with me if you want to live!", before clarifying that she means at home during the summer.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Roger and Francine's subplot is a reference to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.
