Roger takes Francine to a remote island to make her a better cook. In the subplot, Stan suffers a strange injury.

Tropes:

  • Anyone Remember Pogs?: Roger tries to bring back slap bracelets but is unable to get one to slap around his wrist properly.
Roger: Well, the results are in. Slap bracelets are back!
  • Blood from the Mouth: Roger is dying from his bear attack injuries, made clear by the blood he keeps spitting up.
  • Brutal Honesty: While the rest of the family are reluctant to tell Francine the truth about her cooking, Jeff blurts out that her cooking sucks and they hate it. Hayley sends him to the "quiet corner" for saying it.
Jeff: We hate you! You’re a bad lady!
  • Call-Back: Klaus had a poster of a New Way Sidewinder XTR Automated Side Loader, a callback to "Garbage Stan." Just as in that episode, the family, namely Francine, tears it off of the wall.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: When Stan gets his nail removed and goes back to being a terrible piano player, the Nordstrom manager lunges at him with a hammer and nail to try to replace it. Stan is prepared and throws him off, sending him flying over a railing and onto two escalators below that rip him in half.
  • Deserted Island: Roger and Francine travel to an island with just a small group of people (and a lot of bears) as company so Roger, as Frenchus Mallmank, can teach Francine how to cook.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: As they’re finally leaving the island, Francine questions if Roger’s body will grow back.
Francine: Roger, your body's gonna grow back right?
Roger: It always has before. Oh god, what if it doesn’t?!
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: The camera zooms in on Roger’s surprisingly gory injured leg covered in slashes and turning black & blue.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: In order to keep the bears from killing them, Roger urges Francine to feed them by cutting off the lower half of his body and cooking it.
Roger: I’ve hit my goal weight!
  • Lampshade Hanging: The fact that practically every person Roger introduces the Smiths to is one of his personae gets lampshaded on the way to Frenchus Mallmank with Francine.
  • Lethal Chef: Downplayed. Francine's cooking isn't bad per se, but since she keeps following the recipes without adding something original, her dishes come off as boring and soulless.
  • Mad Doctor: Steve and Hayley take Stan to Dr. Kalgary about the nail in his head and, as usual, he’s creepy as hell. He asks if he can have Stan’s brain, drinks out of a preserved specimen of some kind, and wants to turn the brutally-killed Nordstrom manager into a monster, just to name a few.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Roger switches between his persona Frenchus Mallmank and the persona he used to travel with Francine. She turns around to see Roger leaving on the plane, and then turns back to see him in his new persona while out of breath, telling her to stop turning around.
  • Only a Flesh Wound: While hiding from Francine in the crawl space, Stan gets a nail impaled in his head. Instead of killing him, it only punctures the speech portion of his brain leaving him unable to speak (and apparently become a master pianist) for a week. When Dr. Kalgary pulls it out it makes a popping sound and he's immediately restored to normal functionality, none the worse for wear.
  • Time Out: Disappointed in his brutal and unnecessary honesty to her mom, Hayley puts Jeff in time out in the dark part of the crawlspace.
  • Worst Aid: Dr. Kalgary's treatment for the nail in Stan's head is to aggressively pull it out with a hammer, making a popping sound.
