Recap / All Hail King Julien S 01 E 03 Enter The Fanaloka

Go To

It is Franksving Day in the kingdom, the day where every Madagascarian writes a wish on a rock which are all placed in a basket to be lifted to the Sky God Frank so that he can grant said wishes. Everything runs smoothly until the balloon is released and Julien gets caught to it by a length of vine. While Clover is able to save Julien, she is suspicious as the vine Julien was caught on is not native to the area. Julien however insists it was just an accident, and continues the celebrations by playing on the royal water slide, only to land head first into an empty pool. Now both Clover and Maurice are suspicious that someone is out to get Julien, but Julien is still hearing nothing of it and refuses to have extra security following him around, cramping his style, so they send Mort to spy on him. Mort intercepts Julien about to eat a fruit claiming that it could be poisoned. Julien, still not convinced, decides to let Mort taste test for him anyway, which leads to Mort becoming violently ill. Julien begins to think everyone has a point, and after another test at Mort's expense, is now also convinced someone has it out for him.

Clover insists that Julien will remain safe at night with her on guard, and leaves him to sleep. Despite this, someone manages to break into his bedroom and introduce himself as Karl, the evil genius behind all the tests for Julien. He's heard the (somewhat exaggerated) legend of how the new lemur king singlehandedly defeated the fossa and saved his kingdom, and is excited to have finally found an opponent worthy of his genius. Karl leaves Julien to prepare for their inevitable showdown.

Tropes:

  • BFG: When Karl decides to take things seriously, he does so by pulling one of these out on Julien.
  • Brick Joke: Julien's Franksgiving wish from the beginning of the episode. Unable to decide, Julien simply wishes for Frank to surprise him. so he does by dropping the wish balloon on Karl at the very end of the epsiode.
  • Deus ex Machina: See Brick Joke above; as far as Julien is concerned, he is literally saved from a seemingly inescapable situation by the sudden divine intervention of the Sky God Frank.
  • Foe Romance Subtext: Even Julien isn't quite sure what to make of all these surprise visits to his bed at night.
  • Mistaken for Badass: By the time Karl heard of the events of the first episode, Julien's triumph by rockslide has become a story where he grew into a giant capable of breathing fire and shooting ice.
  • Overly Long Gag: Mort vomiting continuously after eating the poisoned mango.
  • Rule of Three: Karl appears in Julien's bedroom three times. On his third time, he messes up his Stealth Hi/Bye routine and accidentally teleports Julien out of the room instead.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Karl's preferred method of entering and exiting Julien's bedroom at night.
  • Toilet Humour: As a kind of civet, Karl naturally brings up Civet Coffee; coffee made from beans that have been eaten and excreted by civets.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: A poisoned fruit causes Mort to projectile vomit on screen for nearly a minute.
  • The Worf Effect: Karl demonstrates his superiority by sneaking into Julien's bedroom past Clover's tight surveillance, and then by easily defeating Clover in a one on one fight.
  • Worthy Opponent: Karl considers Julien to be his, mistakenly thinking that he's the only one in Madagascar as brilliant as him.
