Recap / All American S1 E9 "Keep Ya Head Up"

Go To

For their win against the Malibu Dolphins, Coach Baker and Spencer are set to receive Coach of the Year and Player of the Year awards. However, Spencer is too occupied with dealing the loss and grief affecting Crenshaw in the light of Shawn's death. Spencer is worried that Coop is descending down the same dark path as him. On the other hand, Olivia suspects that her father may be cheating to clean up Jordan's drug test.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • All for Nothing: Spencer's attempt to convince Coop to let go of her anger ultimately fails, as she decides to join Tyrone's gang.
  • The Dead Have Names: During Shawn's funeral, the pastor recites the dead names of all kids Crenshaw lost to gang warfare throughout the years. Spencer later does the same during his acceptance of the Player of the Year award.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Asher takes Layla's encouragement of him to always find a way to "come back" (as a football player) as meaning that she wants to reconcile with him.
  • Dramatic Irony: The only one who suspects Baker's cheating of the drug test is Olivia, who, as a former drug addict, knows exactly how long a drug is supposed to go through a body's system. Olivia herself seems to let her father off the hook after he denies the act.
  • Happy Flashback: There are several flashbacks of kid Spencer, Shawn, and Coop playing, as well as Spencer comforting Shawn after his brother's death.
  • Harmful to Minors: As seen in the flashback, Shawn was already on the path to gangbanger from when he was a little boy.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming; Spencer learns from Tyrone that, behind his back, Shawn told everyone nothing but good about him and that he was destined for something greater, which was why they never attempted to recruit Spencer as a gangbanger or led him to a downward spiral. When Spencer says that Shawn always heckled him, Tyrone replies that it was his privilege.
  • Manly Tears: Spencer cries for the first time in the series after learning that Shawn had secretly vouched for him when he was alive.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: It is revealed that Shawn had an older brother, Brandon, who died a year before the series began, meaning their mother, Ruth Scott, outlived two sons.
  • Pet the Dog: Tyrone telling Spencer about Shawn's secret vouch for him, when he was previously presented as an asshole gangster.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Since Ripley denies that she leaked the information about Jordan's use of drugs, and Baker saying that Skolnick would have just reported Jordan if it was the case, it's unknown who filed the complaint.
  • Sex for Solace: Conversed. To head off any disappointment and to alleviate any guilt Spencer may feel, Layla tells Spencer after they have sex that she knows that it was this trope and it's okay with her. But Spencer tells her it meant something to him and surprises her by saying he wants to be more than friends.
  • Their First Time: Spencer and Layla.
  • Throwing Out the Script: Spencer tucks the script for his acceptance speech in favor of giving an impromptu one to dedicate the dead Crenshaw kids, including Shawn.
