Polderstad is plagued by a number of mysterious burglaries, the police suspecting they all are the work of one criminal. Alfred plays a nightly game of chess with Henk, and falls asleep. The white queen comes alive and Alfred takes her outside.
Continues in De Witte Koningin (The Queen Loses Her Crown)
Tropes:
- Ambiguous Situation: Was this episode a dream? Was it real? Or was it some kind of a blend between dream and reality? The burglary really happened, and Krabnagel told the police that he saw Alfred with a white chess queen, not specifying whether the queen was humanoid or just a piece.
- Bad Guys Play Pool: Dolf is shown playing pool with Hannes and Wannes. He has been an antagonist since the beginning, but now he's an actual criminal.
- Blunt "No": White Queen's response when Ollie asks her if the playing card royals aren't hapoy in their own world.
- Call-Back: When Sherlock asks about Krabnagel, Dolf refers to the events of episodes 4 and 5.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: In the finnish dub, at least:
- Alfred: It's Krabnagel, always chasing children!
- Dog Stereotype: Inspector Sherlock is some kind of a bloodhound and works for the police.
- Easily Forgiven: White Queen pays no mind to being tackled by Pikkie since magpies obviously can't control themselves.
- Mind-Control Eyes: Pikkie gets them again when he notices White Queen's crown sparkling with a weird light.
- Shout-Out: Inspector Sherlock's name is a shout out to Sherlock Holmes.
- Thieving Magpie: Second time it hapoens to Pikkie. Though the crown could be somehow supernatural since it emits light in near-complete darkness.
- Weirdness Censor: Ollie and Pikkie don't remark on and aren't bothered by being visited by a living, flying chess piece who looks like a chalk-white woman without a lower half and whom Alfred introduces as a chess piece. Krabnagel also sees them, in flight and then up close, and is only surprised that there's a "little girl" in the random yard, though he does initially wonder what exactly White Queen is.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: King Radboud doesn't appear in person and is never even mentioned again, but there's never any indication as to why he died. Since people are predicting it, illness is likely a factor.
