Recap / Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog S 01 E 017 Over The Hill Hero

Go To

The seventeenth episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Captain Rescue, a former Golden Age superhero, comes out of retirement to help Sonic save Hill Top Village, but Sonic soon finds his heroic efforts hampered by Rescue's incompetence; after Sonic rejects his attempts to help, Rescue is tricked by Robotnik into capturing Sonic. After wondering where he went wrong, Rescue decides to redeem himself by rescuing Sonic and helping him defeat Robotnik.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Ad-Break Double-Take: Lampshaded; after Robotnik brags about having Mobius in his clutches both before and after the commercial break, he wonders if he hasn't repeated himself.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Scratch and Grounder use odd walker machines which are basically cockpits attached to massive walking steel beams with overly massive shoes to destroy Hill Top Village.
  • Badass in Distress: Thanks to Rescue being tricked by Robotnik into helping Sonic, Robotnik traps Sonic in a force field, and Rescue needs to redeem himself by rescuing Sonic.
  • Battle Boomerang: As Sonic descends back to Mobius after he escapes from Robotnik's force field, Rescue attempts to stop Scratch and Grounder by tossing his Badnik Boomerang at them. The boomerang misses them and ends up pantsing him instead.
  • Cat Up a Tree: One of Rescue's old home movies shows him rescuing a cat stuck in a tree.
  • Formerly Fit: Old home movies of Rescue show that he was a fit superhero in his youth. Since he went into retirement, he became overweight and out-of-shape.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: After he accidentally manages to pants himself with his Badnik Boomerang, Rescue wears a pair of boxers with hearts on them.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Sonic manages to use Scratch and Grounder's sneeze bombs against them by covering their blimps with pepper, causing the blimps themselves to sneeze into each other and explode.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Rescue allows the Obviously Evil Robotnik to convince him that he's another hero who's overshadowed by the show-off Sonic.
  • Mythology Gag: A majority of this episode's events take place in Hill Top Village.
  • Old Superhero: Captain Rescue. He was once a great superhero in his youth, and has come out of retirement to help Sonic save Hill Top Village from Scratch and Grounder.
  • Once per Episode: Robotnik's catchphrase "I hate that hedgehog!" is generally said at the end of most episodes. This is played with in this episode, where shortly after Robotnik has retreated with his mooks, Rescue ends the episode with "I like that hedgehog!"
  • Parasol Parachute: After Sonic destroys Scratch and Grounder's blimps, he descends back to Hill Top Village on a parasol.
  • Pepper Sneeze: Early in this episode, Scratch and Grounder drop sneeze bombs onto Hill Top Village. They explode into clouds of pepper that make people sneeze.
  • Psycho for Hire: When Robotnik had Scratch and Grounder demolish a city with walker machines, Scratch commented mirthfully:
Scratch: And to think we get paid for this! Bwahahaha!
  • While You Were in Diapers: After Sonic calls Rescue an old-timer, Rescue takes offense at this, and retorts that he had been saving Mobius from bad guys since Sonic was a "hedgehoglet".
  • With Friends Like These...: Sonic delivers a variant of this to Rescue for cutting in on his heroism:
Sonic: You're making my work go really slow!
Rescue: I'm just trying to help!
Sonic: Yeah, well, with help like yours, we don't need badniks!
